I have a Halo 3 question

What started that whole "Can I haz Recon" craze back then? I'm hoping someone who's here has been on Bungie longer than 2007 to know how it all started. Did Bungie show off Recon and Bungie Flames in Halo 3 in game in some video before any of the map packs? and that's what got all the obsessed fans to go crazy about it? Or did modders dig up the games files and were all like "What the fuck is Recon and Bungie armor?" back in 2007?

I'll admit I'm guilty for being a part of that craze too back then, except I wanted to have Recon since 2008 for a machinima, its a requirement for the antagonist in my story I didn't get it until 2011. Then 343 gave it to everyone who has Xbox Live before 2012, and MCC has everything available including the Bungie chest itself. So now I have all that I need to make my story, I just need to quit being a lazy turd and start working on my script.

But back to the topic? How did this whole craze get started? Especially with "OMG FLAMING RECONZ!"

It was an armour given out by bungie specially to certain people. Until ODST came out you couldn't get it without it being awardrd to you.

The recon armor was Bungie exclusive until they started giving it out to random people. The first of which was some person that filmed themselves getting killed by a traffic cone, which became a meme. The flames stayed employee exclusive.

And everyone obsesses over what they can't have.

It was the 10-12 year olds at the time that would spam-message Bungie employees on Xbox Live and on Bungie.net saying dumb shit like "I CAN HAZ RECONZ?"

Similar thing happened with the fake Crystal Armor pictures that you would see in people's file shares in the pre-game lobby.

I'm still pissed 343 never released the other armor options in Reach. The image in the defiant map pack montage was TOTALLY a different helmet 343 and no amount of saying it wasn't isn't going to make me believe it.

It absolutely was, and they teased it with the dolls in Reach and referenced that in Halo 5.

I can't remember the exact details, but I'm pretty sure it was a data issue that prevented them from being able to actually add new armors to the live game without certain clients shitting the bed.

Well at least we have it all in MCC, and if you're good at film modding, you can swap armor in films.

Also I think Pope Rex and Nathan Fillion are the only non employees who have it for good. Everyone else at least had it for one day.

the vidmaster stuff came in 09 around the time ODST came out, cuz you needed to do ODST stuff to finish them all. from h3's release until then recon was super rare & only given out from promotional stuff/extreme circumstances

No that was before.

And I did them all. I actually had to beg friends online to help too because the only ones I needed were the campaign ones and I was done.
