All you really lose is the ability to gain a covenant item by invading another world or gain ember/covenant items from helping other people.

Throughout the game you can find people who will give you different "badges" that you can equip in your equipment screen.
It's something to use online. With assisting other players through an area or invading other's worlds to kill them.

Nothing you have to worry about when Offline.

They do, but most of the items you can get from Covenants are optional and better for use in PVP/PVE CO-OP.

you can get rewards like spells and a weapons by invading/being summoned in a covenant but they all suck dick and are obtainable in offline mode as well through farming specific enemies

Also in online mode you can summon for help if you're stuck at a boss

I completed so much today that I don't feel like updating, but I just want you guys to know I'm thoroughly enjoying myself. I'm really taking my time and exploring each area, building up my stats, finding cool armour.

I've yet to take on the Cursed tree guy and I haven't explored the forest. I wanted to make sure I got everything I could at the High Wall of Lothric and the Undead Settlement. There's this blue knight that's on my kill list, too, but he's really tough. There's one door at the High Wall that I can't seem to find the key for, and I killed the giant throwing the spears across the chasm so I should be exploring that area tomorrow.

I also got the night's watch armor I think. It was a pick up at that area with the fire demon dragon thing, where the marshmellow knight helps you fight.

Certain enemies do drop covenant items although they are pretty rare. If you grind them long enough you can still get the covenant rewards offline.

So I used this Raw gem on my +2 Lothric sword... was that a good idea?

It's says I have 158 physical, but then when i go compare it to my older sword (+3 Broadsword), there's a "+ 23" beside the lower physical stat of 152

Care to explain?

The +23 is the Damage from your stats and the weapons scaling.

When you look at a weapon in your inventory you should see S,A,B,C,D,E, or - next to the images that correspond with strength, dexterity, intelligence, and faith (most weapons are strength or dex) the heigher the scaling, the more damage you get based upon your strength or dexterity.

Raw enchant removes the scaling(or lowers it, don't remember) but raises the base damage. The upside is when you have low stats you usually get more damage. The downside is if you have say a sword with an A scaling in strength, and 40 strength you're going to get way more out of the scaling them you would the Raw enchant.

No weapon scaling bonus.

So it is usually best when using a weapon you are not specialized in. (I;E: You are a magic user who wants a longsword as a backup weapon)

Got to the Abyss Watchers boss fight today. I've gotten a lot better, it seems. Not dying nearly as much as I used to.

The boss fights are the worst part of the game, honestly. Not because they're bad, but because they're not as good as the rest of the game. I always enjoy myself more when I'm exploring and upgrading my character. Ah, well.

My friend Yoel died, and I think the reason my guy looks all bloodshot and dead is because I used Yoel's upgrades too many times. I'll have to heal the Dark Sigil with something like 60K souls to get rid of it, I think.

I found some Knight in a well in the Cathedral of the Deep. Probably have to buy some armour for him.

Got through Farron's Keep -- fuck that place. It's impossible to navigate, I'm slow as fuck, I'm always poisoned, and I lost like 24K souls somewhere in there. Especially for someone like me who likes to 100% every area.

But so far I can't believe how much I'm enjoying myself. Seriously one of the best games I've played in recent memory.
