You play as the original, regular Snake in MGS3. Due to him going into his mission with no extra weapons or supplies, he was given the codename 'Naked Snake'.


And then in MGSV he is Punished Snake/Venom Snake. Dunno how exactly that happens yet though

Both Liquid and Solid Snake were members of a United States military branch known as FOXHOUND, where every member is given a rank (Snake, Ocelot, Raven, etc.) and an identifier that they choose (Solid, Liquid, Revolver, Vulcan, etc.)

Naked Snake, the "father" (or, the original specimen from which Liquid and Solid were both cloned from), who would eventually become the titular antagonist of the series, Big Boss, was also the individual who started FOXHOUND and gave Solid his rank, as he was his "son." Presumably, Liquid, who joined FOXHOUND after Solid retired, chose "Liquid" to demonstrate his opposition to Solid.

No, there is no "gas" Snake. There is a Solidus Snake, a clone who was extracted a few years after the first two. Kojima thought "Gas Snake" was stupid, and he was right.

Solid Snake is apparently called 'Solid' because his morals, motives, and loyalty are all constantly stable, while Liquid's are constantly changing...or something. Solidus is the state of matter where any heat added makes it a liquid and any taken away makes it a solid, to denote that he has Big Boss' full set of genes, making him a genetic combination of Solid and Liquid (Solid got Big Boss' dominant genes while Liquid got the recessive, but Solidus got both).
