In Soul Silver. Not 5 years constantly and my attempts have become less frequent has time has gone by, but damnit I will get it eventually.  I WILL NOT GIVE UP. WHEN I GET IT I WILL BE SO HAPPY.

A few of my friends have caught shiny Legendaries pretty easily and it's pissing me off, I have yet to catch one.

Every shiny I've ever caught has been 100% legitimate and encounter-based, without the use of any silly tricks or techniques--and I'd like to keep it that way. Because of that, however, I'll probably never get a shiny legendary.

Soft-resetting basically guarantees that you'll get a shiny, based on the principle of statistical inevitability; if you keep trying over and over, you're going to get it eventually. To me, that sort of thing takes away some of the legitimacy, as well as the fun. Gotta be the first attempt.

Sounds ridiculous, but I know a friend of a friend who, on his first time playing HeartGold, chose Cyndaquil, and it just happened to be a shiny--so it's definitely possible.
