Love all these experts in the comments pretending they know about the industry just because they go on IGN or some shit.

You ask constructive criticism from other people in the industry, just look around and you will find plenty of game developer communities ready to help you out on understanding any issues you may come by. Only rarely and selectively you should ask players, or if you can stomach then swim through the seven seas of hate and cynicism to find a few gems. (It doesn't seem that you are capable of doing that, though)

Let me ask you this: do you enjoy making video games? If so, continue doing what you're doing. If people are calling you a "wannabe dev," who the fuck cares? It is what you like to do and you will get better in time. I myself plan to get into game development/design once I get out of high school, and if there's one thing you need to realize before you get into it, is that there will always be people trying to put you down. Trust me, there is a difference between constructive criticism and flat-out being a dick.

Do what you want to, fuck everyone else.

The problem is that actual devs would be hard-pressed to say that a career in the video game industry is worth pursuing.

Not that most users would mention that--they're too busy having their 'lolDeci' circlejerk.

No.

I've spent the last 2-3 years programming the most mediocre shit in the world, never being anywhere near good enough to relate my stuff to that of a "real" developer.  Only until these last few months has everything I've learned in my time of reading APIs, textbooks on AI, game engine architecture, etc... started to come together.

A year ago, I could make a fairly buggy flash game with nothing impressive.  Now, I'm working with networked multiplayer games over cloud servers in Unity/Unreal, procedurally generated models + terrain, custom lighting shaders, etc... in a custom game engine using DirectX and OpenGL.  You just got to keep at it, because it picks up if you find something interesting.

Once again: you're really letting people on this forum get to you too much, dude.  Also, calling you a mediocre game dev isn't constructive criticism: the industry would be dead if devs quit every time kids on forums said "this sucks".

You're right man. Games would be a thing of the past if that happened, and I remembered how I got my passion for wanting to make games 3 years ago, and I still do want to continue.

We should collaborate on a project sometime, I could use your netcoding skills, I don't know netcoding.

I'd be down, but preferably in the summer, when I have more time.  I'm also in the process of setting up a blog with Unity and Unreal networking tutorials from scratch, which I'll link to you sometime if you'd like.

I'd love that. Yeah I prefer the summer too. That would be perfect.

Take a break? Get a regular job and just play games for fun. Till you get that spark to create something thats yours.

It sounds like you're putting yourself under pressure,  just take a break perhaps?

Also this place is hostile as fuck, I've been doing the tea thing for years to test myself on how much I can take, just realise that this place is what it is, volatile and always will be.  If you want constructive conversing you may need to look elsewhere,  or just pay notice to those who care.

*sips tea*

My post had nothing to do with finding a job/keeping one.

I have no context for this thread but you shouldn't let people on the internet turn you off learning to code and trying to make games if that's what you want to do.

I wrote my share of unpolished and/or unfinished gamey stuff in highschool and college, and I work as a software dev now but not in games.  The time is absolutely not wasted regardless of what anyone else says so long as you learn and improve in the process.

If it has nothing to do with jobs--a job being the primary source of money for someone in video game development--then what was it about?
