Wait, no that was wrong. OKAY POINT IS

just because some skin may be showing, that doesn't always mean it's suddenly making the character shallow. Or if a woman has big breasts. A thing that may shock some people (brace yourself), is that there are women out there

who actually have big breasts

I know, crazy right? If women should all care you like you say, how are they supposed to feel when people suddenly condemn a character because of her bust size?

We can

Thing is, all shallow characters rely on fanservice, but not all fanservice relies on shallow girls

did that make any sense? I think yes, but paranoid no
lara croft is a really bad example

alyx is one

i want, like, five hundred thousand more
The new Lara Croft is one that doesn't just rely on tits. That's why I used her. If you want me to get you more examples, I can.

Excuse me, I'm full of dog poison
No, you're talking about her physical appearance.
Which is her design.

Character design refers to the whole character. Their motivations, mannerisms, backstory and the part they play in the narrative.

It's not just their physical appearance.

lara's redesign is a step in the right direction, but it's not fully there yet

we don't have to condemn characters that almost make it--but we have to make it clear that it's not good enough

i do, anyway

She's wearing a tank top

That's not exactly bad is it? If there is ANY cleavage showing, it's bad?

He simply wants there to be a good reason for her to look like that. And there never is a good reason.

I mean, a tank top is better than a bikini, but a t-shirt is better still and would fit perfectly fine with Lara specifically.

those are not the only two variables

bust size is another issue i see
i'm sure the game has breast physics, too, but i could be wrong
the vaguely seductive look in her eyes

being well-endowed isn't inherently bad, but they're obviously accentuated in ways i have trouble defining, because i'm not really an expert on aesthetics

then i look at alyx, and she doesn't really have any glaring issues that i can see

Many archaeologists wear tank tops... Generally because where they are working is a hot environment.

It doesn't have breast physics, and there is nothing "seductive" in that game she gives at all, seeing as she's always getting stabbed and shot at. In fact the first hour of that game is basically "how many ways can Lara get fucked up?"

Ehh. Quiet has to wear a bikini so she doesn't suffocate.

There's pretty much no good reason to sexualise a character at all unless it progresses the story in some way...

I mean, I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to complaints about her design, but she's not perfect.

Quiet is a perfect of hyper sexualizing a character for no reason. She wasn't a strong character at all and the lame ass excuse of her breathing through her skin is insulting.

I really do think this is just nitpicking, Lara's new design was perfectly fine, there's nothing wrong with it.

Quiet's design is ridiculous and the reason for it is even worse, but given Lara's situation, and the game her outfit is perfectly fine.

That one had been stewing for while ever since this thread took off. Fortunately I finally found the right words to adequately describe the idea, even if I wasn't entirely sure of it. So let me know what you think after a while, I'm intrigued.
So, yeah, I agree with you to an extent. Earlier, I was speaking from a position of objectivity, which was wrong of me, because the bottom line of my argument is that men and women should be portrayed as "realistically" as possible, which is sort of an appeal to nature.

In other words, I'm projecting my personal taste onto everyone else, which isn't right.

However, my personal taste is still my personal taste. That hasn't changed a bit. I don't think I can justify my arguments from a feminist perspective anymore--simply my own perspective. My values. You can accept or discard my values as you please, but I'm going to have my values. Nothing is preventing me from discussing my values with other people and attempting to persuade them into my line of thinking.

It just won't be from a feminist "sexual characters are sexist" standpoint anymore. It's not that it's sexist--I just really hate expressions of sexuality, and they're incredibly overdone in the game industry. THAT'S my problem.

I hope that made sense. I have a headache.

Yup. Just not sure what the difference between Quiet and, say, Bayonetta or Zero Suit Samus is. Why condemn the look of one but not the other?

Tank tops are also significantly better for pretty much any and all sports with could be justification for Laura (look at Olympic track, women's lacrosse, blacksketball and so on). She's also on a tropical island...

For sure, I only made the comparison because both are justifications for cleavage no matter how you swing it.

Quote
What more do you want?

The developers have literally every choice under the sun when it comes to creating their game, which means they actively chose to have cleavage in the game. Why not just make her wear a t-shirt or something?

It's different in real life considering those people choose to wear tank tops. But in a game where the character doesn't have the choice, it's kinda like "Okay, we KNOW someone actively chose to dress her this way. What does this look achieve for us?"

So women can't wear tank tops?

Why was the creative decision for Lara to be in a tank top made? The answer the that question is what fuels my complaint with her design.
