For all know the most innovative things I seen in a FPS game is the spawning system for the Americans in Metal of Honor Airborn and the spawning system in Section 8. When you die instead of respawning your death effects the game world. The person that killed you becomes more powerful and they might become a captain or a captain challenges a higher up for their status.
If I had to guess it's for competitive reasons, such as having certain areas play well when well lit, but having hard to see spots with rain or night shadows.
My favorite things on FPS games are traps and buttons that make something happen (like goldeneye for the GameCube or Turok for the Xbox)

This thread just makes me realise BF4 is actually unique, weird
I miss using the night vision goggles from CoD 4 multiplayer in nighttime maps
