Oh yeah man, there's absolutely no reason to have a deeper more immersive narrative to expand the lore on a universe of a game that tells a very linear story, which takes years to develop.

All of the Star Wars books, games, and comics were just a cash grab too.

Nobody legitimately cared about what happened before or after the films.

Mass Effect is easily the weakest sci fi universe so Halo roflstomps

The Mass Effect universes shielding doesn't work against plasma/bullets.
On top of that, unless a biotic is insanely strong, none of them will be able to throw Spartans/Elites/Brutes/Hunters.
Haloverse's ships are also bigger by literal miles, so while their guns would shred ME's ships, ME wouldn't be able to do a whole lot to them back unless they fought in superior numbers every single time.

Except with books you can expand on the universe in a more practical way than what you could with video games and you are able to go deeper in them as well. A book would be a more practical to link games together thn having side games for it. The other thing are books based off of a game like Halo The Flood. You are able to add more content to it that would be pointless having in the game and have a deeper focused to the characters like minor ones.
