If you're just gonna use it for pokemon might as well get a regular 3DS or even 3DS XL, not the new one. You can probably get them for 150 'merican used at Jewstop. You'll have to set up a Nintendo ID when you start it up unless the previous owner's is still on there. 2DS is garbage quality, don't even think about it. All the DSs and pokemon games have wifi connectivity and you can get a shit ton of the critters you're missing online from other people. You only need infrared to trade with other DSs in person. Only one save per cartridge though.

The games literally hold your hand when you get started playing it, they pretty much show everything. Eggs are still there and it's much simpler along with EV training.

For EV/IV training use this site:

If you're looking to just play XY/ORAS, then a standard 3DS model is all you really need. Personally, I use a 3DS XL, because I like having a larger screen. Despite being larger, it still fits in my pocket just fine (as long as there's nothing else in there <_<) and the common complaint that the graphics are "blurrier" just because it has the same screen resolution is bullshit. The only downside is that you're paying extra money for it, but I think it's worth it. Normal 3DS screens are tiny.

Do not get a 2DS--it's a complete joke and a waste of money. Not only can you simply turn the 3D effects off with a simple switch on any 3DS model, you can't fold the 3DS, making it unwieldy and more susceptible to screen damage.

As for online connectivity/trading, XY/ORAS definitely have all of that. I haven't actually traded with anyone online, ever, so I can't be sure about its caveats. I do know that there's this feature called "wonder trade" that allows you to anonymously trade with someone online, and you can sometimes receive interesting stuff from there. I would think as long as you have someone added as a friend (with your silly friend codes), you can freely battle/trade with them.

About catching 'em all with only XY/ORAS: I heard the same thing, but I'm not positive if it's true. What you're gonna have to do is pay attention to what they call "event Pokémon". Every once in awhile, Nintendo holds online distribution events where they release a special, and usually rare/exclusive, Pokémon that you can download for free. Sometimes they'll be distributed at certain retailers like Toys 'R' Us or Walmart, which can get annoying, because my nearest Toys 'R' Us is out of state.

This tends to be the only way to receive certain Pokémon like Mew and Celebi and Jirachi and Arceus. Serebii has a nice database that you should check out and keep your eye on.

As for breeding/shinies, etc... I'll make a separate post for that, in case you already have questions here...

If you can find an XL for cheap, go for it. If you have big hands than you don't really have a choice other than an XL anyway.

I would skip out on X/Y on go straight to OR/AS simply because the X/Y sequels will be coming within 2 years and also because there is almost no post-game.

Just buy a regular 3DS with both sets of games. You can easily trade or battle with most counties in the world and the Pokemon Bank costs like £5.00 or whatever your equivalent is, this allows you to trade Pokemon fin previous games to ORAS.

Oh yeah, ORAS has more legendary pokemon for capture than XY, so I'd go for one of those.

Secondly, I don't know that much about pokemon. I know the basics and can play the games well, but the whole breeding / shinies / pokebank / gen transfer / EV IV training / online trading is all from past my time. Can anyone explain some of this to me?
Breeding is kinda complicated. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If your mission is to complete the Pokédex, just know this: The only way to get certain Pokémon, like Pichu, is by breeding. So catch yourself a male Pikachu and a female Pikachu (or a Ditto) and drop them both off at the daycare. If they like each other, well, you'll get an egg containing a Pichu.

Breeding is integral for producing the "perfect" Pokémon for battling, as certain attacks can only be passed on to certain Pokémon if you breed them together, and the IVs will eventually start accumulating as well. Since you're not a competitive player (yet, anyway), don't even sweat it.

Shinies are just super rare varieties of Pokémon. They're a different color, and they sparkle. Neat.
In the past, you had only a 1/8000 chance of seeing one, but in modern generations, they made it much easier.
Decreasing their value in the process. Oh well.

Besides the color palette, shiny Pokémon are no different than their non-shiny counterparts. They are not stronger, contrary the popular belief.

Pokébank: Don't worry about it. It's just extra padding for your PC. There are enough spaces in your in-game PC boxes for every single Pokémon that exists, so, unless you want to catch even more than that, for whatever reason, Pokébank is unnecessary.

Gen transfer... Uh... Just watch this. So yeah, scratch part of what I said above. You might need it if you want to migrate that far into the series.

EV/IV training... Don't go there, man. Don't go there.

Would definitely recommend an XL over the base model. Not even a question.
You'll get a friend code / mii / nnid upon set up. Street pass, online, etc. too.

Up to you whether you want a 'new 3ds' or the older model. Older model works just fine. Newer model has a few exclusives, amiibo, and a bad excuse for a second thumbstick. Supposedly better 3D angles as well.

Not as much help on pokemanz. Only play them casually. Still only one save per game. Can't go a 3ds thread without plugging Fire Emblem Awakening though. Do it.

Do the trades still have their usual I'll give you this regular Pokemon for a legendary Pokemon?
Yes. It's fucking horrible, I don't even know where people get off doing this?

Or the I'll give you this shiny legendary if you give me this lvl 8 legendary that you fucking know is impossible and I'm just doing this so I can show off and be a smug prick! If only the hacked lvl 8 legendary pokemons worked I would love to see the look on their faces

Oh for the love of God, this.

GTS is so fucking broken because of this shit.
Similarly they can lock a Pokemon off just by asking for coffagrigus, because the brain wizards at Faccistendo, geniusly banned The name of their own pokemon with their word filter.

Speaking of wonder trade. I once put in a lame ass Zigzagoon and got a lvl 80+ Dusknoir in return. IT WAS AWESOME

There's many many Pokémon that can't be traded because of that censor.

Even Bulbasaur.

Because "sau" (meaning "sow", as in pig) is apparently a curse word in German.

Wait, pokemon bank costs extra money? What does it even do? Do I need it to trade between XY and ORAS? Can I still store 700+ pokemon without it? I'm not looking to go back to any of the older games, just sticking to XY and ORAS.
It's only 5 bucks a year and it's for storing up to 3000 pokemen.

X/Y are shit, so get ORAS. Though you'll need both if you want to achieve a full pokedex / living dex.

XL is the superior model. Sexy matt finish.
Picture is somewhat out of focus since its up scaled a little due to the larger screen. Also the standard model appears to have higher contrast, better colour. Easily noticeable when compared side by side, but nothing that should influence your choice in any way.

That would make it impossible to get all the pokemon though, no?
You can trade Pokemon between X/Y and OR/AS so it would be a lengthy process, but not impossible.

Alright, thanks. I'll just ignore that then.
At first you'll only have 7 boxes. Once you store at least one pokemon in each box you'll gain access to more boxes, up to 30. You'll get one more for capturing the cover pokemon making it 31.
