I thought that the gameplay was a great adaption for modern gaming. Though it was rather shallow.

Yeah, they are. So is Republic Commando, but any game made in the same style (without the easy-sell LucasArts logo) would be crucified for being bland and lacking innovation.

Fallout 3 was a great post-apocalyptic open world shooter.
As a Fallout game it was a complete train wreck.

It drove interest in the series, which in turn produced NV which apparently is more cannonically accurate (if that's a word).

So that "disservice" revived the series which would otherwise have fallen into the fogs of unknown games.
