oh dont get me wrong; i love halo 1-3. i think Halo: CE is one of the most competitive FPS games of all time, and i respect the shit out of bungie for being able to make a game with such a ridiculous skillcap. the campaign's story was really cool and the physics and mechanics came together to make a really great, fresh FPS experience. however, the campaign's level design was dreadfully bad. thats all there is to it. id still give CE an 8/10

The only people that will argue that it isn't the best are those who were NOT old enough to play it at the time. Yes, there is level-backtracking, yes, there's the Library. But look at it as the complete package: the music, the ambiance, the plot twists... For example, just think of when you finally emerge from the underground tunnels in Two Betrayals and Under the Cover of Night begins to play. It's such a surreal moment.

ODST is a masterpiece but CE has not aged well at all. I'm happy to admit that it was revolutionary at the time, but it just doesn't hold up to contemporary gaming standards at all.

Cortana is purple, weapon sandbox is perfect, aim/melee mechanics were perfect, level design is consistently great and open, AI enemies rock and marines don't suck, audiovisuals give off a consistent emotional tone, plot is solid...

Original Marathon and Halo CE are the two best games Bungie has ever made [though I haven't played Myth and MI has better multiplayer than M1A1].

Not gonna lie, because I didn't play Halo 1 first (I played 2 first) I was thankfully blessed with not having those nostalgia glasses.

I thought the campaign levels were boring as hell, the mechanics were clunky such as melee (but it was the first entry to I can forgive that), and the story was just... boring. Halo 2 is when they actually introduced the real universe.

Still, the music to Halo 1 is obviously amazing, and for 2001 that's pretty damn cool. However, that doesn't stop me from thinking the game is overall boring as hell and the gameplay mechanics drive me absolutely insane.

It's sad that so far that is the best all around Halo game. Halo 2 ended up being broken and unfinished. Halo 3's campaign and story is a joke. Halo Reach has no passion for both the SP and MP and the campaign is a bigger joke than what Halo 3's is. Halo 4's MP has stupid decisions that kill it. So so far Halo CE is the only Halo game that has a strong campaign and a decent MP Halo wise.

Fun fact: CE was actually viewed as a casualised (and actually is) game by the competitive community when it was released.
