Yes I was just looking at that. So 5 was from the April patch (which is where I confused myself originally) and the October patch is 3. Anyway "it was confirmed months ago that three new characters were to be revealed in late 2015" those are placeholder slots, they can add more or remove them if they want to. It is speculation based on datamined files. It is by no means a hard number, they can include more than 3.

Sakurai himself has made the 3DS's limitations clear on a number of occasions already--and he's also made clear just how long it takes to complete a character. How long did Mewtwo take? Roy, Ryu, and Lucas? Like, a long time.

The time spent between the last batch of characters and this next one is about the same, so...

The notion that there's going to be more than three new characters this time around doesn't make any logistical sense.

I don't think Cloud was the ballot character either. Wolf is basically guaranteed, like you said.

I'm not sure who's going to "win" the ballot, but honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Inkling won.
But it could be anyone. I think it could be either Geno or Shovel Knight, personally.

King K. Rool, Shantae, Snake, Banjo, and Goku are good contenders.

I'd like to make it clear, too, that precisely how the ballot works has been kept extremely vague. Just because X character received the most votes, for example, doesn't mean they're going to make it in--they never said it would work like that.

They'll probably take a number of things into account.
- How many people voted for said character.
- How many people outside of the ballot would purchase said character.
- How much hype would be derived from revealing said character (sort of a corollary to the last point).
- How fitting said character would be in a colorful and family-friendly Nintendo fighting game that's rated E10+.
- How relevant the character is in this day and age.
- MOST IMPORTANT: How easy it would be to get the rights for said character.

Having two million votes for one character doesn't automatically fulfill all these things--especially the rights issue.

Because of this, as much as I'd like to see them, I doubt they'll release the ballot results, because many people would probably be upset or confused that they didn't just automatically pick whoever got the most votes.

A lot of people think the Inkling trophy, as well as the Mii costumes, disconfirm them, but I wouldn't be so sure.

Before Mewtwo was in the game, there was already a Mewtwo trophy, and of course, there are Mii costumes for a lot of characters that are already in the game, like Mario and Captain Falcon.

I don't think they'll release results but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. They can do what they want and I'm going to try to expect the unexpected. (They literally put Cloud in) But they're only going to make characters that people will buy. ( As you said) Like they're not going to do Geno lmao, they did Cloud for a Square rep instead. And the thing with the rating, Bayonetta would be cool but it's not going to happen. They cut a Tharja trophy FFS despite dat ass.

I'm fully expecting Inkling though. I don't know how accurate certain individuals were in teasing/leaking a character that may or may not be in the game last month. That drama was stupid and then MOTHA FUCKIN CLOUD OUTTA NOWHERE FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
