Update 6 - The Reunion

It's been a while since the last update. I've been very bogged down with coursework in the past week so didn't get to play much in that time.

Between now and where I left off, I spent some time finishing off all the side activities in the White Orchard area, from destroying ghoul nests and clearing bandit camps to finding even more hidden treasure and sources of power. I mentioned this previously, but the side activities do seem very well done in this game, and it appears that some have a small impact on the world which is awesome. They all fit into the world rather naturally rather than feeling tacked on.

On the road I came across a merchant, clearly upset. He told me that his corpse had galloped off with all of his cargo into the swamp, before being devoured by the monsters within. He asked me to retrieve what remained of the cargo, specifically a small box that he had had with him.

When I found the wreckage in the swamp, something was off. There was a man’s corpse there, and the cart had been hit by several arrows. I also found the dead horse, looking very much uneaten. I took the box and headed to confront the “merchant”. When I accused him of lying, he jumped on his horse and rode off, but it didn’t take too long to catch him.

Finally, he admitted to being a Temerian soldier. He had attacked the cart as it was delivering medical supplies to the Nilfgaardians, and he wanted them for his own men. Despite his pleading, I turned him in and received a reward from the Nilfgaardians.

After finishing off some other minor tasks, I returned to the inn where Vesemir was waiting for me. I told him about Yennefer and Vizima, but he seemed concerned about some of the more recent arrivals to the inn. A young woman started arguing with Elsa about her decision to take down the Temerian shield, and when Vesemir intervened, the other visitors drew their weapons on the two Witchers.

We killed the bandits, and left when we saw the horrified faces of the civilians in the bar. To our surprise, Yennefer was waiting outside for us, with a Nilfgaardian escort. She told me that the Emperor himself was waiting for me, that he wanted to make an offer. It was here that Vesemir and I parted ways; he was to head back to Kaer Morhen. After saying our goodbyes, Yennefer, the soldiers, and I rode off to Vizima.

On the road, we were attacked by the Wild Hunt, the same things seen in Geralt’s dream at the beginning of the game. Yennefer and I managed to escape, but all the soldiers were killed.

At Vizima, Geralt was bathed and his beard shaved. A Nilfgaardian general, the one whose soldiers were killed by the Wild Hunt, came in and questioned me about the attack. I told him exactly what happened, but he didn’t seem to believe me. He left me to finish preparing for my audience with the Emperor.

Update 7 - Arrival at Velen

I got dressed and the chamberlain taught me how to bow, although when Geralt performed the act it looked more like a dab. The guy led me to the Emperor so that I could show off my moves.

Emreis was clearly not impressed, and moved on to tell me that his daughter, Cirilla, was being chased by the Wild Hunt, and that he wanted me to find her. I never realised that Ciri was the Emperor's daughter although I did know she was Geralt's sort-of adopted daughter or something. I'm not sure if the identity of her true father was something that we knew in previous games but the update to her biography seems to suggest that Geralt wasn't happy about it.

After I finished my conversation with the Emperor, his chamberlain led me to speak with Yennefer. We discussed the situation in more detail, including Ciri's possible locations. The first place I was to search was Velen, while Yennefer would head to Skellige, and so once again Geralt and Yennefer said their goodbyes.

After a five days of travel, Geralt arrived in Velen. I was to find an Imperial agent named Henrik, who apparently had information on Ciri. I passed through the village of Mulbrydale, making sure to check the noticeboard. On my way out, I came across a priest of something called the Eternal Flame. All he asked me to do was burn the bodies of the fallen on the battlefield to stop them from being eaten by necrophages, which seemed reasonable enough.

At the first corpse pile I was attacked by a new enemy called a rotfiend. It wasn't too difficult to kill, although it exploded unexpectedly when I killed it and I lost quite a bit of health. At the final location I found a lone survivor, named Titus, fighting off a pack of ghouls. It turned out that the priest had been killing people and throwing their corpses onto piles, and had hired me to destroy the evidence.

I confronted the priest about what I had learned. He tried to bribe me, but I wasn't going to take it. In response, he and his guards attacked. After swinging his mace around a bit, the priest died in one hit, which was kind of amusing.

A side note: there are times when Geralt really reminds me of Xavier: Renegade Angel. His voice, the manner in which he offers his help to people, the times when he talks to himself all make me think of Xavier for some reason.

Update 8 - New Leads

As I was leaving the dead priest and his men behind, I was approached by a shady merchant offering to sell me a counterfeit pass that would allow me over some nearby bridge, one controlled by the Redanians. His price was ridiculous, so he offered me some work to possibly reduce it. He wanted me to protect his brother-in-law, who worked on clearing battlefields. I said I’d think it over, but at this point the quest seemed too high level to be attempted now. I didn't need to get across the bridge at this point in time anyway.

On the road to the Henrik’s location, I came across a wild dog patrolling outside a small house. Inside, I could see a young girl. I killed the dog, allowing her and some other children to come outside. The girl said that they hadn’t eaten in a week, so I gave her some food, and in return she gave me… a doll. Okay?

After a short ride, I arrived at the Inn at the Crossroads, where I was to meet Henrik. I asked the inkeep if he was there, but before he could say anything, a group of bandits wandered in. They started taunting me about how I have two swords, to which I bought them all a round of drinks. After a tense moment, everyone was calm - for now, at least. In a more private area, the inkeep thanked me for not starting a fight, and told me that Henrik should be in Heatherton.

Upon reaching Heatherton, I found the village empty and lifeless, save for a lone man being attacked by dogs. After I rescued him, the man told me of how the Wild Hunt raided the village, and tortured Henrik for information before killing him. Entering Henrik’s hut, I found his corpse. A key was inside his boot, and I used it to unlock a trapdoor to the cellar. Inside, I found a book containing notes on Ciri. It also mentioned two possible leads - a baron and a witch.

Update 9 - The Witch of Midcopse

I decided to go after the witch first, as the quest had a lower recommended level. On the road I found some woman complaining about about something, so I stopped to check on her. Some nearby shrine had been toppled over, and she needed someone big and strong such as myself to lift it back up. I did so, and then she asked me to repair any other shrines and punish those who damaged them. I suppose if I find any on my journey I’ll do that.

I stopped in a small village where I got a blacksmith to craft me a new sword. I also bought a treasure map from him, which I suppose could be useful. On my way out I was attacked by some bandits on horseback. I didn’t realise time slowed down when you held down your attack. In previous horse battles I was just waving my sword around hoping to get a hit.

I soon arrived at my destination: Midcopse. The people there seemed sceptical of my appearance, and overheard some mention the Bloody Baron. I asked one of the villagers where I could find the witch, and she told me that her husband had been to see her recently about a back problem. The husband was initially a little less forthcoming, but I used Delusion to get him to cooperate, and he willingly gave me the witch’s location.

While I was looking for the witch I was attacked by some weird new creatures - Nekkers. They seemed pretty weak, not too much trouble. When I reached her house, a small crowd was already gathered around it. The villagers were looking to her fix all of their problems, and she was getting visibly frustrated. After she’d had enough she told them all to go away and went back inside.

Following her in, I found that she had disappeared somewhere. After some searching and looting of her house, I activated some portal using a skull on one of her shelves. I entered the portal to find myself in some enclosed foresty area, with a structure in the middle. The witch, Keira Metz, was waiting for me in the bath. Geralt ogled her for a bit before she got out and put some clothes on. Turns out they were “old friends”. After a… prickly… conversation, she finally revealed that an elf had been asking about Ciri, and had told her to meet him at some ruins to tell him any information. So, the two of us decided to head over there.

At the ruins, the elf was nowhere to be seen. We went inside, only to find ourselves on a broken bridge. On the other end was the Wild Hunt, creating a portal to someplace. Keira created a portal to the other side. When I went through, however, I was dropped into some other area of the cave, and the portal closed before Keira could come through.

After fighting some drowners on my way back through the cave, I found Keira, clearly terrified, shielding herself from a bunch of rats. I destroyed the nearby nests and we briefly argued about whether to continue after the Hunt or not. Eventually, I convinced her to keep going. Soon enough, we found the Masked Man, the elf. Or rather, his “morphotic projection”. He gave a message that was clearly meant for Ciri, but Geralt was able to understand it. "Follow the sign of your sword." Ciri's sword had a swallow on it apparently, and that meant we had to look for swallow signs in the ruins to uncover more of the mystery. Keira and I headed deeper into the cave.

Swallow regenerates health over time, but not instantly. Use too much and it'll fuck your toxicity. Good for emergencies but I wouldn't completely rely on it.

Best way to avoid damage is investment in Quen. There's a skill point that regenerates health when enemies hit you while using it.

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.

Update 10 - Pursuit of the Hunt

We made our way further through the cave, following the symbols as instructed. We soon came to another of the elf’s projections, this time telling us to “find Kelpie,” which was apparently the name of Ciri’s horse. After springing a couple of traps, and examining some horse drawings in a pool below us, I was able to open a secret door.

Keira and I entered it to find a portal, which took us to a room containing a golem. I kinda sucked in this battle. Took me a few tries to finally kill it, although Keira dealt the final blow in the end. Soon enough, we found another portal, which took us to the other side of the bridge at the entrance to the ruins. All of the mage’s guardians had been frozen by the Wild Hunt. We followed the path to find the Wild Hunt trying to open some door. When they spotted us, one of the mages cast a freezing spell across the room and created a set of portals, from which came a bunch of monsters to fight us off. Keira created a shield to get us through the chamber, which meant I had to protect her so that she could close the portals.

After we were through the chamber, we continued our chase. We eventually came to a lone Wild Hunt soldier, Nithral. This fight was pretty fun, but it was a bit annoying when he decided to shield himself and regain all of his health. Defeating Nithral, we found yet another projection from the elf. It didn’t have much to say, aside from mentioning some witches at Crookback Bog, wherever that was. Keira said she’d read about them, and gave me her book. I’d have to read it later, though; we had to find a way out of these ruins first. Keira gave me some disc thing that would open up hidden passages or something.

In return for her helping me, Keira wanted something back. The elf had promised her a magic lamp, but seeing as he wasn’t here to give it to her, she would have to find it, and so I offered to help her. This required completing a puzzle which was basically lighting four torches in the correct order to open a door. Behind it, Keira found her lamp.

Finally, we reached the surface, and were out of the ruins for good. It was here that Keira and Geralt said goodbye, but not before Keira asked Geralt to come see her again sometime. I suppose I could do that later. For now, I would either look into the witches of Crookback Bog, or go see the Bloody Baron.

Update 11 - King of Wolves

I read the book Keira had given to me - The Ladies of the Wood. Apparently I had to lure a child along some Trail of Treats in order to find the witches I was looking for. The Trail was miles away though so for now I turned my attention to the Bloody Baron. I never realised quite how far Keira had taken me to get to the ruins.

At the Baron’s castle, I was greeted by the bandits who I bought a round for at the Inn at the Crossroads. Seems that my actions towards them had an impact on this conversation which was nice. The Baron himself reminds me a bit of Robert Baratheon from Game of Thrones. He started to tell me about when Ciri arrived at his castle...

And the game transitioned to me playing as Ciri, which I didn’t realise was a thing. As Ciri, I saved a young girl from a pack of wolves. Ciri appears to handle a bit differently from Geralt, at least in terms of appearances. Instead of rolling or sidestepping she has some magical dodge thing going on, and her combat style seems to be quicker and more agile.

Ciri was hunting some creature called the Wolf King. I followed the girl, Gretka, through the woods to find it. There’s something really weird to me about how the children in this game are voiced. I can’t tell if they’re well-acted or terribly-acted. We found the Wolf King in a cave about to kill some guy. After putting the Wolf King down, the guy took Ciri and Gretka to the Bloody Baron, thinking that one of them was the lord’s daughter. Obviously, neither of them were.

At this point the flashback ended and I was back with Geralt. The Baron refused to give any more information. Instead, he wanted me to find his missing wife and daughter. In return, he’d tell me more. Seems fair enough. After some searching around their bedrooms, I found a strange talisman. The Baron didn’t know what to make of it, but he told me about someone who might.

Update 12 - Mission: Aborted

The Baron had suggested I speak to “The Pellar,” who apparently had quite a reputation. After getting rid of some rowdy soldiers outside his hut, I showed the Pellar the talisman found back at the Baron’s castle. Turns out he made it to protect the Baron’s wife, Anna, from evil spirits or something. Before he could help me further, however, he needed me to find his missing goat, Princess.

There was an option to refuse, but I assumed it would make me do the quest anyway so I volunteered to find his stupid goat. I had to use a bell to lure it back to the hut, while protecting her from wolves and bears. A bit pointless but some of Geralt’s dialogue was funny. In exchange for bringing Princess back, the Pellar did some weird shit which caused him to become possessed or something, and revealed that Anna had been pregnant but miscarried, with some implication that the Baron was abusive towards her. He told me that I now needed to find the discarded fetus - or “botchling” - and lift its curse to locate Anna and Tamara. Never thought I’d ever have to do anything with a miscarried fetus in a video game.

I returned to the castle to find the stables on fire - the Baron had flown into a rage and set the place alight. A civilian was trapped in there, so I went to save him before confronting the Baron about his wife. Before I could say anything though, the Baron tried to fight me, so I beat the shit out of him. Once things calmed down inside the castle, the Baron came clean. He was an abuser, never of his daughter, but much of his wife. One night the two had fought so brutally that Anna had miscarried. The lost child was all that remained when he awoke the next day. Geralt informed the Baron of the plan with the botchling, and so the Baron took me down to where he had taken it.

At this point I had two choices: I could either try to lift the botchling’s curse, turning it into a “lubberkin” which would lead me to Anna and Tamara, or simply kill the creature and let the Pellar do his work on its blood. I choose the former, and so the Baron carried the botchling back up to the castle while I protected him from wraiths. Up at the castle, he buried the child, at which point we needed to wait some time for it to turn into a lubberkin. The Baron went into his castle while I waited by the grave.

At midnight, a magical ghost baby rose from the grave and led me on a trail, taking me to a smokehouse, a dead horse, and finally a fisherman’s hut. There, I found out that a fearsome beast had attacked and taken Anna, while Tamara had escaped to Oxenfurt. On my way back to tell the Baron of my findings, I was approached by a man named Ronvid, who wished to fight me to honor some Maid Bilberry.  I hit him a few times and he ran off, but he did say that we’d meet again.

I found the Baron sitting in his garden. In his castle, I filled him in on what I’d found out. I volunteered to go even meet Anna (if alive) and Tamara personally. However, the deal did only involve me finding out their locations, and for that the Baron told me more about Ciri. She had been hunting with the Baron and his men, and were camping out for the evening. Ciri challenged the Baron to a horse race, which I was winning before being interrupted by a winged creature swooping in from above. The Baron stopped his tale there, and so I was off once again to go find his missing family.

Update 13 - Trail of Treats

I rode off from Crow’s Perch, but before heading to Oxenfurt I decided to visit Keira Metz again to see what she wanted. Along the way I completed some more quests and side activities, one involving putting down a lynch mob. Turned out Keira wanted me to lift some curse from Fyke Isle. I guess I’ll do that later, seems a bit high-level to do now.

My journey took me back to the Redanian-controlled bridge I had been to when I first arrived in Velen. The guy selling fake papers had wanted me to help his brother-in-law out clearing scavenging corpses in on a battlefield. At this point, I decided to go ahead and help him out, even though I was still pretty low level for it. I was able to protect most of the scavengers, but unfortunately the brother-in-law died, and so the guy refused to sell me any passes. Damn. Still didn’t need one right now, anyway.

Eventually, I reached Oxenfurt. This was the first truly large settlement I’d encountered, and I was pretty impressed - while this seems to be something that carries across to even small villages and minor locations, I love how alive and immersive the world fields. It’s clear how much effort CDPR put into this game. Bethesda could learn a thing or two. I picked up whatever I found on the noticeboard and continued my search for Tamara.

When I found Tamara, she didn’t seem overly enthusiastic at the prospect of returning to her father, and I couldn’t really blame her. She told me her side of the story, and also revealed that she had become a follower of the Eternal Fire, the same religion that one guy who tricked me ages ago was a part of. In the end, Tamara refused to go back to her father. Fair enough. As expected, the Baron was not pleased with this outcome. I had no other information on his wife, either, so he sent me away.

The only place for me to go now was Crookback Bog. In order to find these Crones I had to follow some Trail of Treats, which, sure enough, it was an actual trail of treats. After a short, meandering journey, I came to a small set of huts, empty save for a group of children. They didn’t know anything about Ciri. One of the kids mentioned someone called Johnny who might be helpful, but some old woman came and took him away, and told me to get lost as well.
I went to the other kids for help, but in return I ended up having to play Hide-and-Seek with them, like a real Witcher. Once finished, they stayed true to their word and distracted Gran while I spoke to the kid. Turns out this Johnny character had seen a girl with ashen hair come through, and could be found somewhere in the swamp. After fighting off some drowners and water hags in there, I came to a burrow, where a creature called a “godling” was hiding. This thing looks like a really old child - Johnny, I’m guessing. He couldn’t talk but did gesture for me to follow him, and so I did.
