Yes, but that doesn't mean it isn't sometimes true.
no, i don't think it's ever true

if you suck at a game, there's likely a reason for it

To quote Atticus.

If you lose to youngster Joey's Rattata it's not because that battle was hard, it's because you suck.

well, the only way you could lose at that fight is if two things were to happen

1. tackle missed, every single time (which isn't your fault)
2. you used your debuff attack instead, which doesn't mean you suck--you're just ignorant of how the game is played

if you know how the game is played, it is literally impossible to lose to youngster joey

That's part of what makes people bad, learning how to play the game would help them get better and at least be decent when it comes to non-pvp battles. Another example would be failing to complete a level in one of those old N64 Sesame Street games. You know, games that are designed to be easy because of their intended audience.

Sick humour, no respect.

Starwars 3 revenge of the sith. Lol I'm srs, it's the only fighting styled game I have and my brothers kicked my ass on it all the time. It was so much fun.

That game was so bad....
it was terrible. But still lots of fun.

That's part of what makes people bad
not really though

i know the rules of chess, but i can't even beat the AI on chess titans
i'm really not that good at chess--and i even know obscure rules, like the en passant and shit

i see where you're coming from here, but i just think we're looking at it from different angles
when i hear words like "suck", i think of an innate inability to do something

if you suck, you can't get better, because you suck
if you get better, it means you didn't suck--you just had a few hurdles to jump over

To boil this down; both of you have different opinions of what 'being bad at videogames/something' means.

Discussing this further will give insight to both of your perspectives but probably won't change any of your opinions on it.

Just a heads-up.

my opinion is that you can't really be "bad" at video games
you can only be "better" or "worse"--relative terms

everyone plays differently, everyone learns differently, and so everyone is going to have their own unique experience
creating this notion of "suck" only serves to create a negative atmosphere, which is probably not a great plan

maybe "bad" means "worse than the majority of players", but that's sort of difficult to measure, so we just sort of casually toss it around to describe players who have a hard time doing X, which is a petty standard

"i did X on my firs try, so anyone who can't do X on their first try sucks"

I have a blister on my thumb from Melee.
Holy fuck do we go hard at smash.

My characters of choice are Warrior and Peach.

Who's yours?
Warrior? Who would that be?

I played as Roy and Falco.

Oh dang yeah
I need to be more careful about that...

to tie this discussion back to fighting games

daigo umehara is widely cited as one of the best street fighter players in the world
if you lose to daigo, someone who knows the game inside and out, that doesn't mean you suck at the game

he's just really good at the game, and you
are not as good

"suck" is just... i don't know, it technically means the same thing, but generally speaking, i'm just not a fan of putting down players for simply not knowing as much as i do about how a game works or not having the dexterity/reaction times/etc. required to play a fighting game at a high level

you can talk about how in dark souls, i suck at the game because i got myself killed by the giant monster in the tutorial a bunch of times before i figured out that you were actually supposed to run away from it (which goes against all my gaming sensibilities)

i would argue that the game failed to convey what i had to do properly

there's a message below the monster's feet that instructs you to run away, and that's your only hint--and the only way to see the message is if you go near the fucking thing, which will result in your swift death

soooooooo

Wait, I didn't bring up any point about it.

The point that the game didn't convey the message what the player is required to do correctly was brought up only by yourself.

Whilst I only said "inb4"...

There's a reason the game did that, games were getting sugar coated in well....movies, they were meant to be and feel like movies, doing some cool shit that wasn't really hard to do, that's when the era of the Souls series appeared, which is really just how a lot of older games used to do things, gave you some help, but the rest was up to you. The game didn't tell you your purpose, you found your own, one way or another.

Some people like the concept some dont.

To finally post something topic-related; I liked Marvel vs Capcom 3. It feels quite satisfying to successfully connect a 3-man-combo. Though it was just in a tutorial...

And I could pull it off only once...
Spoiler
And that's because I suck at it.  :P

and that sort of thing is my shit, but the reason i stopped playing dark souls wasn't because i "got stuck in the tutorial", unlike what so many people here seem to believe, but that's a different discussion

i wouldn't just stop playing a game because it was "too difficult" for me

judging two things based on very specified skills such as completing fatality combos.
Some are better at spaming the same move while others are better at true combat.
