I've never actually met Mel in my 100s of hours playing FO3.
Gonna try and hack that Vault 106 computer again before I head back out to Arefu....It's still locked. Guess it's locked forever. :-/ Wish I didn't fuck it up the first time.
...who the fuck is Mel?
Evan King tells me that the Family (the gang who keeps terrorizing Arefu) could be hiding at either Moonbeam Outdoor Cinema, Hamilton's Hideaway, or Northwest Seneca Station. Apparently, they only move out at night, so it's difficult to track them. I made sure to visit all the locations to collect their map markers so that I could fast travel to each one at night. The only place that was at all worthy of note was Northwest Seneca Station. There's an underground path that leads to... somewhere (or perhaps nowhere) that I'll check out later. There's also a grocer that I looted. As soon as I got out, though, I was ambushed by members of the Talon Company.I forgot to mention earlier--when I was looking for GNR, I came across a Talon Company Merc accompanied by a Protectron almost immediately after I killed my first Super Mutant Brute. He was hostile, so I did what I had to do and killed the fucker. I had no idea what the Talon Company was or what they do, and I still don't--but apparently they didn't take kindly to my offing of one of their agents, and placed a bounty on my head for it.Three of them attacked me as soon as I walked out the grocer. After besting them all, I picked up a note that read this:Private Contract: Kill Jacob!QuoteBoys and Girls, we've gotourselves anotherholier-than-thou white knightneeds putting down. If you want a tip for hacking computers, you can find little bits of code in between the words that can give you help, like removing fake passwords and giving you more chances, best to try for the password 3 times, and then go searching for the bits of codeAlso it tells you how close your choice was if you got it wrong the first time, the "1/5" or "3/7" tells you that your choice had 1 out of 5 letters right or 3 out of 7 letters rightim pretty sure the game gives you this hint though

You can either tell him to piss off, or give him five caps out of pity. He then runs off.I don't know what his story is.
Mel is a homage to Mel Gibson, the actor who played Mad Max. In Mad Max 2 Gibson threatened the Gyro Captain using an unloaded sawed-off shotgun.
I see. That explains their use of the term "white knight".So basically, fuck these people with extreme prejudice.
Spent three in-game nights scouring the three locations delineated by Evan, but still no sign of the Family.I eventually went astray and found a couple of oddities--as I was walking along some kind of dislodged road, I found some kind of rogue Mister Handy robot called Mister Gutsy. I had no idea those things could shoot flames. That's scary.I also found a radscorpion. I wish I found more--their poison appears to be worth a fortune.
The search for the Family continues, I suppose. At some point, I gotta just pick another quest to do.

I'd recommend just googling the next step.
When you first play Fallout your little radar in the bottom left corner is really confusing at first. Although that quest gives you three locations. The areas are also confusing.

What are those little arrows underneath the line, and what does it mean when they go black? Are those just areas that I'm reaching, or something?
