I wasn't gonna make this thread at first, because I know that Fallout 3 is a long game, and I wasn't sure if I really wanted to have such a big, congested thread (considering we have three ongoing ones already) on the front page.

but i mean, it's not like it matters

So I'm playing Fallout 3 next. So far, I've played an adventure FPS, an action FPS, and now I'm about to play an RPG-style FPS. By the time I finish this one, I think I'll have a nice, round basis for the FPS genre--and we'll see what I end up liking the most. After that, I have Dark Souls next on my list. Then I'll do either Halo 2 or Borderlands (a game that I have played and enjoyed thoroughly, but have never come close to beating).

Before playing, I just want to make it clear that I don't really want any game advice at all, whatsoever, unless I actually ask for it. You can feel free to tell me whatever you want, but just know that I'm going to be avoiding/ignoring all bits of advice that are without warrant. It's not that I don't appreciate your advice--I'd just prefer it if I learned everything about the game myself. Cool? Cool.

With that said, I have one question:

Exactly how long should I expect to be playing this game for? I don't plan on side-questing often--only when I think I need to, or if I'm incredibly bored. I'll mostly try to focus only on the main quest. Or, would you recommend that I side quest as much as possible? In which case, I'd still like to beat the game in a timely manner (like... by November).

Thanks, and I'll try to have some fun with this.

Oh yeah, and I'm playing the GOTY edition on PS3 master race. As always.

hey
Hmm...

I can't remember how long the main story by itself is, but knowing Bethesda, it's probably not overly long so you'd want to do side quests to get more out of the game

Dunno how long you tend to play for, so I can't really say

The Andale quest in and of itself makes up for anything wrong with the game. Easily one of the most gripping, intense segments of any video game.

You'll  be playing for at least 50 hours.

So in your time it might be a few months. You can put your review into Diary entries or something along those lines.

see, this is the kinda thing that i don't want to see

i'm sure the andale quest is amazing, but i don't know if i want that expectation set up for me
you know what i'm saying

so if we could avoid this, that would be cool 👌

Also, why haven't you 100%'d the game yet? I finished it by the time I was 15.

This thread is literally "Fallout 3 impressions". That was the biggest impression I got from the game. I don't know what the point of this thread is, then.

i guess beating it by november is out the window then

but yeah, as always, i'll be updating the thread periodically as i play

'cause i'm not into FPS games (understatement)

i've been playing through a bunch of old "classic" FPS games that i've missed out on lately, due to my bias, including half-life 2 and halo (the reviews for which i linked in the OP, in case you haven't read them)

Fallout 3 is far more RPG than FPS. It's more or less Oblivion with guns and choices.

You should play as a melee brawler. Build  him nice and tanky. Hell explosives as well for the harder troops.

Just don't rush through it. I completed the game by the time I was a level 14 or so. I'd veer off to do a few side quests after every other campaign segment. Do not cheat amidst the GOAT test.

As soon as I got to Megaton I just left for the wastes. Didnt even talk to Mariorty until I was level 20 at least.

It was fun to make my own mark

Uhhh the play time can really vary, even just by how you decide to build your character, and how you approach combat.

My impressions with the game when I first ran through it was: "this is shit, but I paid $60 for it"...and then my playtime was at 50 hours out of nowhere.

Just to be clear, this isn't my first time playing--just my first time playing with the intention of beating it.

God I suck at customization. I might just go default or something. Use one of the presets.

I love the options where you can barely tell what it is you're changing.

I hate these.

The more time I spend on these stupid things, the more aware I become of how fucking weird the human face really is.

Fallout 3 sucks
I didn't have the best time with it last time I played. I didn't play much, though.

Thank god I can change my "sellion height", though.

I'm just gonna pray that Verb finds a particular building in the game that happens to start with a D and ends with "wich."

All of you should know what I'm talking about.

It's in standard fashion to make your characters in betheseda games look inhuman anyway.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.

I'll say something.

Verb, ignore what anyone tells you to do, even if it's the "best" thing to do. The point of this should be to enjoy it as you see fit and play it organically. You're following a marker for a quest and happen upon a building in the distance or a cave? Go and explore it, or ignore it.

Point is, play it how you want to play it, not how we tell you to. Whatever makes you happy or increases your enjoyment. And also yeah, ignore the "THIS QUEST IS GREAT/IT SUCKS" because like you said earlier, it only sets you up for expectations, good or bad.

I personally think New Vegas is better for many reasons (the world is boring as heck though), but since FO4 is right around the corner, it's only right you do this one. But if you're playing on PC, can I recommend something? As in, just something that won't make your eyes hurt.

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/2672/?

I know it's a mod, but like, Fallout 3 has this UGLY green filter for god knows whatever freaking reason (and NV with an orange one. Needless to say, it makes the sun non existent too...). So if you don't want it to look worse than it already is, I'd highly recommend that.

I assumed it was to make the landscape seem more, uh, irradiated? I dunno. It doesn't bother me, really. Thanks, though.

I'm playing on PS3 anyway.
