Cool, I'll remember to post the streams as they become available.

Any games you're particularly interested in? Street Fighter and Smash are enough for me.

I think he's gonna have to. He's had so much practice with Necalli.

Which would be a shame, because I personally can't stand how Necalli fights. ResidentSleeper

Cool, I might watch some of it if I can. Not really my competitive kind of games though. I've always felt fighting games lacked a bit of depth, for a lack of better word.
with the exception of RTS games, i would actually argue that fighting games have more competitive depth than any other genre

i could sit here and explain why, but if you happen to catch the stream--especially the ones taking place on sunday--i think it'll be academic for you

Eh, I've seen dozens of hours of competitive fighting games and watched a lot of Evo before. I even played quite a bit of Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat back in the day. So I don't really see how watching this will change much, as I already feel I have a good understanding of the scene and the games.
soul calibur and mortal kombat are the two worst possible examples you could've given lol

Never said or meant to imply they were. They're just the fighting games I've played quite a bit and the basic idea behind the genre doesn't really change much.

The basic idea being "defeat your opponent"...

There's a HUGE difference between a deliberately casual and ostentatious Mortal Combat and the meticulously metagame of Melee.

The similarities stop there if you're comparing MK to Melee.

Though with Street Fighter I'll give you that.

Oh I know they're bottom tier. They're just the ones I played somewhat seriously. I've also played Melee and Street Fighter IV casually, but that doesn't really matter. I think I've watched enough tournaments and competitive fighting games to understand the games well. But I'm always open to learn more.
I mean, not to sound elitist, or anything. Soul Calibur and Mortal Kombat are fun games and all, but Mortal Kombat was popularized for giving players the ability to rip each other's hearts out--not necessarily for the fast-paced, rigorous, mentally-demanding, and high-APM gameplay that it does not have.

I don't have much to say about Soul Calibur other than that the competitive merit of the series went down the toilet after 2.

So... I guess I'm going to have to pick up after your horrendous mistakes on here too?
CEO was extremely intense and hype (except for the ZeRo upset probably, which was technically unanticipated), and I hope that this is nothing different, or probably more.

I'll definitely watch this.

Why do you like them so much?
i had this long, meandering, twenty-paragraph post, but then i realized that i only needed a few

i've attempted to summarize it in a way that you might be able to relate to

I've mentioned in my Dark Souls thread that the reason I love the combat so much is because it's very reminiscent of a fighting game. You have reads, punishes, blocking, parrying, meaties, combos, footsies--the parallels go on and on, but whereas Dark Souls only gives you two modes of attack--weak and strong, games like Street Fighter give you six modes of attack: jab, strong, fierce, short, forward, and roundhouse--all with their own unique properties, utilities, frame data,  etc. etc. etc. And you have to know when and when not to use every single one of them.

Not to mention, at the end of its lifespan, Street Fighter IV had a total of 40+ unique characters--all with their own moves, special moves, hitboxes, healthbars, and combos--and if you want to be good, you have to know how to fight every single one of them. In a good fighting game, you have to learn to adapt to different character situations. You're not gonna be able to fight the same way against every single match-up--you must adjust your playstyle accordingly, and each player is going to have his or her own unique playstyle on top of their character's playstyle. The possibilities are virtually infinite.

So, therein lies the reason--in the tiniest nutshell ever.

Simply put, the more options you have, the more in-depth the gameplay gets. So, from this fact alone, you can derive basically everything else. You take all the appeal and all the complexity of a Dark Souls-like combat system and ramp it up tenfold--that's a good fighting game. The key is in the level of variation. To me, extraordinary variation not only makes the game both fun and interesting--it makes it beautiful, as well. But that's another conversation. One that I kinda just had with Luci the other day, actually.

If that's not sufficient enough for you, I could easily go on to explain some of the more advanced mechanics and intricacies that aren't normally taken into account from a casual perspective, such as the importance of frame data, what goes on during a player's head during a match, and the inherent complexities involved with having a six-button map with 40 characters to choose from, but I'll save that for later.

One thing to also keep in mind is that no strategy guide ever written has ever made anybody a top fighting game player. Prima has never written a strategy guide explaining how to become good at Street Fighter. You know why? Because there is no one true method. Becoming a strong player is entirely a personal journey--and yeah, people make guides and tutorials explaining ideas and concepts to people, but no one can teach you how to win. It's all earned.
