A salt Rifle
YouTube

It's a six and a half minute long video but here's the story in short anyways;
Before: Get free age rating for your digital game that carries over to physical game sales.
After: Get your digital game age rated and fork over 3k for the game to be rated again for physical sales. For certain Indie, who relied on physical sales, this is not feasible which may force them to close down

Decision making by the same organisation that calls current microtransaction schemes unintrisive and harmless. I mean, it's pretty obvious that the big companies are at play here, getting rid of any potential competition as if their existence is threatened, those fuckers.

Why do we need the ESRB rating system anyway

Can't developers just use their own discretion based on the standard set by the ESRB?

Iirc the ersb is a private entity that's run by the group for the video game industry which is made up of members that hail from all of the largest publishers.

The government has nothing to do with the ERSB as it was an organization that was created to "self regulate" the industry so the government wouldn't get involved.

This is an even better reason to move to digital distribution though. You don't need to go through big retailers or organizations and you can just sell your product to the customer directly.

idk, i find it hard to believe that a developer with the money to distribute physical copies of a game couldn't find 3000 bucks to get it rated

the ESRB kinda exists because devs and publishers were exploiting the fact that there wasn't any kind of rating body and the industry didn't want the government to step in and regulate it for them

How could they exploit it? I dunno I'm not really the kind of person to even acknowledge the ESRB rating so I've never seen its merit.

by having gratuitously violent or sexual content during a period where video games were often looked upon as children's toys

they're not children's toys anymore, but given that games are still heavily enjoyed by young people, i'd say it's perfectly reasonable for parents to be concerned about what kinds of games their children are playing

it's kind of an odd thing to take issue with

like, developers don't give a fuck about your kids, and they probably shouldn't be obliged to

i think it's fine for a separate organization to handle that independently

marketing their products to audiences they clearly weren't intended for. kind of like when cigarette companies would make candy flavored cigs. they didn't make them for adults, they were made to try and get kids early so they'd be addicted for years to come.

granted there's a big difference between nicotine and a videogame, but the intent is still the same.

for people on places like this the ESRB likely doesn't mean much, but we're also the minority. for the vast majority of people the ERSB is a way for them to tell what kind of content is going to be in the game. kind of like how box art is intended to entice the average clueless consumer into picking it up.

the ESRB rating is literally the first thing i check whenever i get any game

not that i even have to anymore, since i'm obviously old enough to play anything, but it's a force of habit at this point

i was the only kid who cared about them, and i'd actively avoid playing rated M games until i was about 14-15, and even then, i wish i would've waited those extra two or three years

Hm, I guess I just assumed parents would look into the game they're buying for their children anyway. You'd also think it'd be much easier to implement some sort of government regulation type thing where publishers can face penalties for misrating their game or something as opposed to having a 3rd-party who can abuse the system like they are. If a studio advertises their game for children and then has M-worthy content, wouldn't that constitute false advertising?

I guess I just underestimated the value of ESRB. I've literally never used it.

this is all well and good until you get someone with an agenda in there that'll start using the agencies powers to enforce their own desires. see our current net neutrality crisis in the US where it might get stripped away due to trump appointing a shill for the ISPs as it's head.

Remotely off topic,  but I fucking love how I can buy all the fruit, rum, or chocolate flavored cigarillos that I want ten minutes from my house but I have to travel to east Asia to pick up a pack of orange flavored cigarettes.

Nanny stating is fucking stupid.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
