I wish I could actually bring myself to commit to playing this game

Can anyone explain how to rank up in the factions? I understand the basic system of completing bounties, but it seems extremely slow. Any recommended systems to work in, missions to take, etc?

Also, is Robigo smuggling still viable? (Post-update from a while ago, where it's a couple large bounties instead of a bunch of little ones)

Go to a station of your choice, choose a faction of your choice aligned with Feds/ Imps. Grind missions for them in the BGS until you get a mission that says Federal Navy (X). Then you level up. You get more rewarding missions the higher your rep with a BGS faction.

Trading, exploration data and turning in bounties are all also valid too. Though I think they only count with the controlling faction? Not sure there.

As for #2, I don't know, but Sothis and Ceos are both widely regarded as good trading if you want to make a couple million easily. They're about 100ly outside the bubble, between Pleiades and Core, going out towards Jaques.

If you're going for federation and you're hudson aligned,the Federal Privateers are currently taking any help they can get for their BGS faction in LHS 215 (Next door to Nanomam/ Hudson's base), as they got it put in by FDev. I've been playing with them recently so /shamelessselfplug

Played some ED for the first time in like 6 months. Bought an AspE, and I'm currently building rep in Sothis/Ceos to work on that. Gonna build up some cash then try faction stuff again.

Broke 150M today. Thinking of upgrading from AspE to a Python for short-range trading. Either that or a Type 9.

I did Robigo smuggling in a cobra until that was patched, then did long-range rares/smuggling in the same cobra until I had about 50M. I messed around doing bounties for a while and then stopped playing. Recently hopped back on and bought the Asp Explorer, doing runs out of Sothis/Ceos. Do missions back and forth to build up rep, then start doing the long range hauling missions; with 84T of cargo, I'd say on a typical run (and I don't try very hard to get great missions, like logging in and out), I make about 15M of pure profit (minus very small repair and fueling costs).

Ah right. I got myself an AspE yesterday and intended to tour Witch Head, Orion, Spirograph and Barnard nebulas.

Well it turns out the entire Col 70 region has been permitlocked so I ended up circling to the California Nebula before heading back through the Pleiades, and detoured to go check out the alien wreckage on the way.

Upgraded to a trading Python. I can go for an Anaconda but I want to land on outposts. Can anyone with Horizons comment on whether it's worth getting? I hear the engineer content is mostly grinding for minimal bonuses.

that said engineers content really depends on your ship, some people have been able to get their condas over 50 lightyears which is insane
