Downloading Metal Gear solid: Ground Zeroes

It's free on gold so I may as well. Anyway, I'm setting it to download overnight, should be done by tomorrow.

what should I know going into GZ? Are there any tricks I should learn that they don't teach you?

I'll probably do, like, my impressions as I go along (shamelessly ripping off verb's idea) so it should be fun.

Silencers break if you use them to much.

This isn't a 3rd person shooter with
stealth
It's ACTUALLY a stealth game. Be sneaky or you will die.

As a metal gear noob these are 2 things I wish I knew when I first tried playing ground zeroes

You don't even need to tranq guys to get rid of them. If you sneak up behind someone with your weapon aimed, you will hold them up. They will remain there forever until you trigger an alert status, or another guard helps them.

Climb guard towers and mark every enemy you see.

In an era when the world was still divided into East and West, The Boss, the Mother of Special Forces and hero of World War II, defected to the Soviet Union. But for The Boss, her defection was no more than a cover. She was ordered to infiltrate the Soviet Union, and during her time there, a rogue revolutionary known as Volgin set off a Nuke with the intent of framing The Boss.

Under orders from the U.S. government, her final apprentice, Naked Snake, took her life.

She was made by her superiors to sacrifice herself to prevent nuclear war.

That was her final mission.

The Boss used Snake to ensure that the Philosopher's Legacy, the vast military fund under Soviet Army control, would reach America.

For these outstanding "accomplishments", Snake was awarded the title of "Big Boss".

Afterwards, Snake turned his back on America and began recruiting soldiers with the help of Kazuhira "Kaz" Miller, a man he first met in a war zone. In 1974, the pair constructed a secret base known as "Motherbase" located in the Caribbean.

Snake's private army continue to grow, until their need for a deterrent prompted them to obtain nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, Major Zero, the man who once worked with Snake to create special forces unit FOX, used the Philosopher's Legacy to expand his intelligence organisation, "Cipher". Cipher proceeded to spread its roots into the furthest depths of the United States.

With no military of his own, Zero longed to rejoin his disenfranchised comrade, Snake, and sent his operative Paz to make contact. When Snake refused, Paz attempted to steal the nuclear-equipped walking battle tank Metal Gear ZEKE, but was thwarted. Upon realising Zero's violent intentions and coming to terms with the Boss's teachings, Snake finally accepts his title: "Big Boss."*

Flung from ZEKE's cockpit, Paz vanished beneath the waves of the Caribbean. . .

They're the result of the Les Enfants Terribles (Th Terrible Children in French) program.
Solid has Big Boss' dominant genes, Liquid has Big Boss's recessive genes, Solidus has an unaltered balance of Big Boss' genes.

Also, I have been made to understand that Metal Gears are like Halos in halo. the series is named after them, but they encountered only a couple of times throughout the series. Or something.

I know they're mechs, so that's always fun. I like mechs.

Pretty much. They're walking nuclear missile platforms that can launch a nuke on anyone from anywhere.

In 1972, Big Boss fell into a coma. Unsure of how long he would remain in this state, Major Zero and the other members of his intelligence society (which would become known as The Patriots) decided to clone him.

At the time, Big Boss was a world-renowned icon, a figurehead for, truth, justice and patriotism. In order for Zero to extend the reach of his agency, he needed the illustrious celebrity persona of Big Boss to be at the forefront of his operations. In case anything ever happened to him, there needed to be others to take his place. Hence, the clones.

3 clones were extracted from Jack (Big Boss): the first, Solid, was to only represent Big Boss's dominant traits. The second, Liquid, was to only show Big Boss's recessive traits.

The third, born sometime after the first two IIRC, was to be a mixture of dominant and recessive genes and become a "well-balanced masterpiece". He is basically an exact clone of Big Boss.

After Big Boss awoke from his coma, he left the Patriots. The nonconsensual cloning was the last straw for Jack.
