It's called Nuclear Winter. It was a world war. So, it's entirely possible the sun would be blocked out for decades and decades, maybe even centuries. Right? I mean, that many nukes going off everywhere, it's gonna be bad...

a nuclear wasteland

A nuclear meltdown is worse than an air bursting nuke and Chernobyl has recovered just fine in a quarter of the time.

Also the Sky in Chernobyl didn't turn green.
100s of nukes hitting one target probably is worse than nuclear meltdown. And Chernobyl is still bad off. Turned the trees red and damaged the animals. But yeah, not like Fallout.

By recovered just fine I mean in the way of plant life. Obviously it still isn't really safe for humans or other animals to live in.

It wasn't "hundreds of bombs hitting the same target", they were spread out across the entire country hitting the major population centers. The DC area specifically was hit with a low yield bomb which is why a lot of it is still intact.

I took it off and bumped up the textures a little bit and it still captured that desolate fucked feeling if you ask me.
well, it must not have been very popular in general if people went out of their way to create a mod for it

this is the chernobyl exclusion zone

in fallout, as far as i'm aware, the entire country was ravaged by nukes

whether that would have any effect on the color of the atmosphere, i dunno, but i personally think the green tint adds a little gravitas to the idea that america was absolutely FUCKED by china

The area isn't safe for people to live in, but it's not a wasteland. The wild has reclaimed the area and made it look like this.

Spoiler

As you can see it's entirely possible to make a place look like it's been ravaged by a nuclear disaster without making it look like it's a barren wasteland. All of this overgrowth happened in 30 years as well, think of what it'll look like in another 170.

If you think the green tinted wasteland looks good that's fine, just don't try to justify Bethesda's art direction with something along the lines of "well it's supposed to look like this because there were a bunch of nukes dropped on it".

Spoiler
I should probably include somewhere in here that I actually don't use any mods like resurrection that would make FO3 and 4 look more like they would if fallout happened in real life and largely stick to Bethesda's original art direction for the series. I'm not trying to hate on them or tear them down for their choice, just dispel the notion that it's in anyway representative of what would happen in real life.

Pretty much I think, yeah. Though the one for New Vegas is fantastic. As someone who was born in the Mojave, the Realistic Wasteland Lighting mod they have for it just makes it feel so much better.

Fallout NV before

Fallout NV mod to remove filter

Mojave Desert

Doesn't take away anything either. I just hated feeling like I was on Mars. This actually immerses me more.

I always quite liked the idea that the Capitol Wastes were just a less extreme Glowing Sea.

Tbh though I did install Green in the Commonwealth and I'd probably say you still get as much of a wasteland feeling as you would anyway. Though the draw distance ia kind of cack on Xbox so if could just be that.

Glowing Sea is a different story since it's directly where the nuke hit, and I think in the lore there was a nuclear reactor or two there or something.

Still, even if it's not realistic, turning off the music and going there is insanely immersive and well done.

Honestly the glowing sea makes no sense in general from a real science perspective.

If you accept Fallout SCIENCE! of some weird nuke doing that then I'm guessing you can accept Fallout 3 being similar. I mean, it's already a world where plasma weapons work and laser weapons are more efficient than bullets so I don't take stuff like DC too seriously.

Hey verb you liked the atmosphere in Fallout 3 right? Like, the way the devs made the wasteland feel?

I think you'd probably like this (just skim through the video)

YouTube

I'd highly recommend it if you like atmospheric games. It really nails it, both on the surface and underground.

I wish Bethesda did a real remaster instead of dumping in a filter and god rays cause it still looks worse than the original PC release.
I agree, this whole remaster thing is pointless unless they add in vegetation and other things to make the game world look life full. The only thing they are doing is making a dead lifeless looking world look better with better graphics.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
I always thought Fallout 3 and NV were a bit overzealous with the filters. Fallout 3 was just greenish everywhere, and then for some reason in NV the tint depended on either the faction territory or localized radiation concentrations (I'm looking at you, Caesar's Legion and Camp Searchlight). Fallout 4 got it right with the temporary yellow filter passing along with the radiation storms.

I'm not really sure what they've remastered from the original to the new Skyrim. Is it basically a Fallout 4 port, something truly rebuilt from the ground-up, or should I be expecting the exact same bugs from the old game to return because no one's bothered to fix them or even implement the Unofficial patches.

it's literally just a port with updated lighting . They aren't even doing new textures

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.

I suppose I could see the point if you didn't have a PC and really wanted to play Skyrim with mods or something, but it's not even a graphical update really

I never paid full price for my skyrim anyway, and with the amount of time I got out of it, I can justify getting new skyrim. I just really want to play it again, but my 360 barely works.

I like my orange gas though!

But yeah, you're probably right. I'm just curious is all since it's free for me. I had zero interest in it at all until I heard that.

Just get it for the PC. You can get a mod which enhances the graphics and another mod which adds to the gameworld so it doesn't look like a wasteland.

If I had a PC, I wouldn't have been playing it on console in the first place.
