Is there anyone who still plays this dated, clunky gem of a game?

I have a habit of jumping back into it every half a year or so, consistently completing it despite the increasingly obvious technical inferiority when compared to its numerous successors. There's just something about the game that speaks to me, a feeling of desolation and despair I never felt with new Souls games; there's that innate bleakness to the game's atmosphere that actually feels oppressive, as if despite setting out to [save the world/seek demon's souls], there really isn't much of a [world left to save/reason beyond having power for the sake of power]. Everything feels finished and worn out, like an old man ready to take the long nap and knows that all he needs to do is close his eyes for a little while to make it happen.

"You fool. Don't you understand? No one wishes to go on…"

It's a wonderful game, that despite the innate flaws and the obviously cut portions, still stands up to even the most recent games. It being great in regards to consistency and quality is still one of the biggest pluses, something that Dark Souls was all over the place about, despite being the fan favourite ‒ the disparity between that first and second half of the game always destroys my desire for a full replay. Not even Gwyn can salvage late game for me.

After playing DaS I always wanted to try it out.

Problem was (and still is) that I don't own a PS3.

While I won't suggest buying a system for the game itself, I have to ask why you haven't purchased one by now. They're ridiculously cheap nowadays.

Because I never wanted one.

I agree with the Dark Souls 1 thing. After you get the Lord Vessel, the game just falls apart. The entire chaos part was a chore, Nito's Dank Tomb was all too stupid, and various other things.

What? Man, Tomb of the Giants is like my favorite area after Ash Lake.

I'm not Asian enough for any of these games. I for real don't get the appeal.

What does being Asian have to do with it

Do you not know the major markets audience for those games? It's the same with the Shenmue series or Final Fantasy. Most of the interest is from the Asian Market (or weeaboos?).

I would say the major market is towards gamers that enjoy difficult rpg. There's really nothing Asian about them, it's a European setting and you're just being blatantly ignorant.

Wait, really? It almost unabashedly appeals to the unforgiving RPGs of Asia and purposefully caters to that style of unforgiving gameplay. Just because a game is set somewhere doesn't meant thats the influence.

Have you seen what Mario 2 was actually like in Japan vs. America? It was viciously unforgiving.

The Dead Souls games have a base mechanic of being unforgiving like many other Asian games.

It's a niche market that Dead Souls was able to break out of slightly but it's still not a triple A game.

I'm not so much ignorant as I'm bigoted to the concept of these purposely unforgiving RPG games.

The controls definitely feel Japanese. ( Clunky and unintuitive )
The stat systems are all also very JRPG in nature.

That's the thing. I've watched "Lets Plays" out the ass on these games too see how generally Japanese the control systems and story telling is.

It just happens to have a broad English appeal. But I can guarantee that Dark Souls games sell bette in the Nihon.

Souls is a throwback to traditional RPG's, rather than weebshit. Japanese influences are going to also be especially apparent when it's made by a Japanese company, that started on a system owned by another Japanese company, and had its initial release in Japan for the two games that made the series popular.

You are right that it is a throw back but to me it's not just a throwback to Western RPGs but mainly to JRPGs.

>Demon's Souls

>Clunky

wot

It's practically a superior version of Dark Souls in many ways.
As a whole, there really is no precision to be had in regards to movement. It fluctuated from insanely unresponsive to a single accidental tilt of the joystick sending you barreling forwards, and that's always a major pain when you're trying to be exact in how you control your character. I can't even tell you how many times that ballista in Latria killed me, or how many times I'd fallen off a ledge and died later on in that world.

That being said, that's an issue prominent in every Souls game, but in no other is it worse than in the first.

Excuse me, I'm full of dog poison
Demon's souls is phenomenal. There are so many things I like more about it than dark souls.

The loading screens were sick, I felt the story was more fleshed out and had better npcs, fucking dragon weapons were awesome, and the worlds felt way different.

Fuck the Tower of Latria, fuck it right in it's stupid ass. Fuuuuuuuck it. Also the weapon upgrades were fucking weird and the world tendency was kind of tedious.

Lord of storms though, still my favorite boss battle.

If you've already got a PS3? Yeah. You can get it pretty cheap pretty much everywhere, and if you like Souls you're bound to enjoy it in some shape or form.

Demon's Souls is only on PlayStation right?
Unfortunately, and seeing as it was produced alongside a team from Sony for people with a better technical understanding of the Playstation system, chances are it will be staying that way. From (intentionally or unintentionally?) teased a PS4 re[make/master] a while back, but who knows if they're actually going to do anything with it.
