It isn't essential to an RPG, but variability and a set goal in the story are the only absolute essential parts. It's an adaptation of pen and paper games, and that's the only consistent part. There's a reason why there are so many subgenres, and it's because RPG is a very broad term.

True. I've never played any of those games you listed, so it makes sense that I wouldn't have thought of them. With the exception of Final Fantasy X, which I completely forgot about.

Rocket Propelled Grenade.

Me beig sarcastic aside, this is what makes an RPG an RPG for me.

-A developing story that can change dramatically based on your choices.
-More focus on the story, lore and characters. An immersive world.
-Free will to do whatever you wish.
-(optional)Customizable characters with interesting preset backrounds to choose from.
