Precursors are transsentient beings. They exist on a level beyond what other normal biological species do.

They don't even need physical forms.

Chozo are themselves believed to have transcended. There's even ghosts of a few on Tallon IV and those are older than the last known living Chozo who disappeared before Zebes was attacked and they could enter and exit existence at will.
When they were still alive they were known to have mastered shit like precognition but were mostly secretive about there actual capabilities.

We do know they were friends with races with literal magic, who could chain moons to planets, and other races who harnessed divine powers on their planet.

So yeah overall it's pretty vague, especially since Other M just decided to ignore them out of existence.
