Because who doesn't love stopping gameplay to sort through menus and meaningless resources to unlock equipment that could have been more organically received in a well-paced story structure?

The fact that I'm playing ME:A may or may not have anything to do with this.

The majority of crafting systems feel tacked on to fill a checklist than a natural part of the game. It makes sense in say, Far Cry as they focus on survival amd whatnot, but a lot of games have them that don't feel necessary in any way.

i seem to recall having many arguments about games with people where they would say things like "but verb, just because it's unnecessary doesn't mean it's bad"

i'm tempted to make the same argument here but maybe that would be hypocritical

so i guess i would just ask, is survival not a key element of a game like mass effect? or alien isolation?

technically speaking, survival just means "not dying," so most games are about survival

It took me 3 years to learn Minecraft's crafting system. Crafting can suck a fat one.

I think I'd be cool with having one settlement and then you have to sort out trade routes, builders and shit with the actual towns. And not have it dominate the DLC.

Crafting is actually good.

It can be. Recently it's become filler for a lot of games. It's particularly dull in ME:A.

I liked it in dead space solely for the reason he's an engineer and it makes sense but you could make the weapons insanely overpowered

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.

I love them. After modding the shit out of them so I actually get to place shit where I want and scrap junk.

Crafting where every little thing is material did make the junkjet irrelevant though. Instead of Fallout 3's "Now useless stuff scattered everywhere is AMMO!" Junkjet we get "I wouldn't shoot that, it has Copper. Oh, and that duct tape... and that... and that... here, just shoot wood at them, it grows on trees"

Crafting in games where it isn't necessary is kinda killing it for every other game that does.
Minecraft? The bread and butter of the game
TLOU or Assassin's Creed? Can ease the struggle or necessary depending on how you play. Small and not overbearing, which is nice too.
Far Cry? Yeah, sorta makes sense...Turn shark skin into bigger ammo belts, when just more leather would do.
TF2? Honestly wtf is it doing there.

Soon the fad will die and games that could really benefit from a system like that won't be popular, or just won't be made because it's been done to death already.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
I thought Dragons Dogma did it well where its mostly just edibles.

It makes exploring the environment a lot more fun
How?

Mainly because some parts are rarer than others and the hope of finding one drives you to search the place

I was in constant need of blades and binding in TLOU so where I would normally just sneak past everything, I went through each infected filled room to find stuff

Do you still consider those experiences fun in retrospect? A week after doing them? A month?

Maybe not fun per se but it definitely adds to the game

Crafting systems puts the player in control of what they have in their inventory so I appreciate the management aspect of it

Like with anything, it depends on how you use it

i wouldnt draw that comparison but i like crafting too

depends on the implementation really

a bad crafting system is bad

a good crafting system is good

this includes the crafting ui

yes lol

Components are rare enough to where searching for them is actually worth your time
There aren't a million different components so I know what each of them are and what they're used for
There is enough overlap from what each component makes so that resource management is an actual factor

And it adds to the feel of the apocalypse when you're scavenging shit to make tools of survival
