Product placements aren't annoying or bad in any way. In fact, they add immersion.

If you wanted to create an authentic '70s feel?

Yes, it would.
You said set in, not for authenticity.
But still no.

What if you don't like smooth? What if smooth isn't the effect you're trying to go for?
If a developor can get a game to run at 60fps without sacrificing anything, but chooses 30fps, then they're stupid.

Under your logic, people who are 300 pounds obese are better than people who are 200 pounds of muscle.
Because obese people have "smoother" skin. And "smooth" is apparently intrinsically good.
Nice straw man.
And possibly the worst comparison I've ever seen.

Nope. Why would they be?

You're the one who's trying to say that "smooth" is intrinsically good.

It's not. And I just proved it with that example.

60fps can't be better than 30fps in any intrinsic sense. It's all in your head.

You can have preferences, sure--maybe you honestly prefer 60fps, and that's fine--all I'm saying is that it's possible for 30fps to be an artistic decision. If a game is meant to emulate the experience of playing some old '90s game before 60fps was so prevalent, then that, in my opinion, is a good decision. Because it wouldn't make sense if the game was in 60fps.

Yes.

Because there are totally no Mountain Dew shirts in real life. None at all.

You can enjoy a game while simultaneously recognizing that it may have glaring flaws in crucial areas.

My enjoyment of a game is not contingent upon what an esteemed peer or critic may have to say about it.

Playing video games is almost always substantially less productive than some other forms of media entertainment, like reading a book.

Violence in video games (and all forms of media) can and does have a psychological impact on the player, and is desensitizing us to other forms of violence, be it simulated or otherwise.

so much this
everyone likes to act like it's r/hailcorporate anytime brands show up
but if they just use some shitty made up brand or generic "BEER" labeling it takes me more out of it than anything

I honestly don't think very many people deny this.

What people deny is the notion that violent video games will not only make you a psycho killer, but are the primary catalyst of violent behavior. Or that the psychological impact is anything but negligible.

I suppose so. I don't really think it's negligible, though. I can't espouse that nurture often trumps nature in the development of one's personality while also denying that the content of many kids' primary form of entertainment is negligible in that growth, though.

Sincerely asking, what is it that the old Fallout games had that the new ones fail to provide? I've played through about half of Fallout 2 (really didn't enjoy the gameplay so I never finished it) and I really don't see it.

Agreed. I've always stated that I don't play games for escapism--I play them because there is a legitimate experience to be had.

I really don't think escapism necessarily entails a useless experience. You can play a really great game that gives you a new and valuable perspective on life while also taking a break from the stress of life.

Mentally unstable people are the ones who're affected by simulated violence regardless of the medium. People who are mentally sound can differentiate between the two and know it's not okay to do it IRL.

Kids exposed to violence (games, movies, whatever) won't grow up to be the next Adolf Hitler.

Linear games don't necessarily lack replay value. I'd do two new playthroughs of Metro before I'd load up Skyrim again.

NV actually lived up to the first two games in atmosphere, story and characters. It did lose a lot of the wackiness of previous games. OWB made up for this, but OWB is still the worst DLC gameplay wise.
3 was a pretty pathetic Fallout game. It lacked the morally grey intrigue of the first games, it's atmosphere was way off, instead of being about the inevitably of war it was about the survival of mankind. The only thing it did right was how wacky the world tended to be.

Uhh... no. The Fallout games never had that "inevitability of war" thing because the war already happened.

Of course not. But kids and teens are still susceptible to stimuli because their brains are still developing, responding to stressors and figuring out what makes them go away. Conditioning your mind to relax through gratuitous violent content, regardless of the medium, is not particularly healthy.

It's weird when guys play as girls and vice versa.

If someone chooses to play as someone simply because they find them sexually attractive, they can go fuck themselves.

I play as a guy in games like Diablo and stuff because I feel a tank is much better as a big beefy dude than some chick.
