would the game's shitty DLC practices affect your opinion on the game itself?

the expansion pass is mostly whatever to me, as long as it's the ONLY expansion they ever plan on doing--but amiibo-locked content is absolute cancer and i've hated them conceptually since day 1

we can all agree that, if a game's every issue is solved by a collection of over-priced DLC packages, that's a pretty terrible and scummy thing and you'd be foolish to support that

but if the game itself is still better, how do you evaluate that from a reviewing standpoint

should the purpose of game reviews be to evaluate art, or to advise consumers?

it's hard to have both because they don't really mix well

Is 7/10 even a bad score to begin with
no, but if a game gets a 7/10 i don't want to play it tbh

anything below 8 seems just like a waste of my time

i'm speaking very generally

Nah, I'd review only what's in the base game. I don't like how the DLC is planned, but it's not what I paid for in the game (and neither is the amiibo content), and I can accept that.

I'd say most reviews are 10% evaluating the artistic aspects of the game and 90% advising consumers. Maybe that's not how it should be. Personally, I'd rather someone examine the subjective aspects of a game at length and only very briefly discuss why it's worth purchasing. I can play the game and experience the mechanics very well on my own.

I got pics and Ill try and add them here later but

Spoiler
holy shit a Japanese Dragon?

Like Im near the bottom of the map just after finishing Surviver: Zelda edition just got into a jungle like region with waterfalls and this dragon slowly and casually flies into the valley, flies out and comes back in. I didnt attack it, even if it did fire very slow electro balls at me, but it was beautiful to just watch fly around and then depart in a worm hole in the sky.

Jacob Potila was actually a Jacob Flotilla of lies.- WarTurkey
I think one of my few problems with BOTW is the lack of a compelling villain. Don't get me wrong, Calamity Ganon looks cool and is interesting lore and story wise, but I don't think he's anywhere near as interesting or menacing as the Wind Waker Ganon.

Even if Wind Ganon dindu nuffin, I agree

This Ganon....is more of a.....well a calamity, a disaster which can be ended, not a villain, it seems like this Ganon is a corrupting force of nature. Which is scary in its own right, but on a grand adventure it doesnt feel as much of a problem as it should. The Blood Moon reminds you of it, but nothing that really seems to put Link solely in danger.

Its a shame too, I agree

Yeah, I was honestly expecting a proper battle with

Spoiler
Ganon using all his energy to finally assume a proper Gerudo form again as Ganondorf and have a conversation with him. I really miss the old Ganon, to be honest. I know we can't always compare to older games but this Ganon doesn't seem as interesting or menacing.

Honestly I wasn't expecting much in terms of story to begin with. LoZ has always been telling the same story in a different way, a high-fantasy iron age adventure in different settings (with exceptions to OoT/MM.) The game clearly chooses to focus on its gameplay instead, which I'm hoping marks a change in the industry to start making them fun again.

This game was the first "See that mountain in the distance? You can go to it." game that kept its promise. It was what I was expecting The Phantom Pain to be. And like Turkey said, the game chooses to tell smaller stories more frequently, which makes the world feel autonomous and alive. Riding up to a warm stable to get some rest during a cold night only to start a conversation with a random reporter who has been struggling to find the mysterious stalhorse that's been spotted north of the campsite guarding ancient ruins is something special, especially when you can completely miss that quest by simply making your way to the next settlement.

It didn't really help that Skyward Sword solidified Ganon as a literal embodiment of evil that was destined to reappear over and over, rather than how he was presented in OoT as a really evil character that managed to resurrect himself a few times.

Vah Ruta (Zora) spoiler
This is the only divine beast I've done so far, but I found the boss to be somewhat unintuitive after he raised the water.

Using the arrow the first time to hit his eye that he was protecting was obvious enough, and maybe I didn't notice, but I saw nothing that would have hinted at shooting it a second time to make him fall.  I spent a good amount of time thinking that I needed to do something creative with my ice blocks, but no - it was a lot simpler than that.

Maybe I'm not in the right mindset, because I usually hoard my arrows and never feel expected to unload on them, but that fight was a little disappointing.

I believe you can use bombs, too, but I never really had any issues with the bosses. Shoot the eye, slash, repeat. Pretty disappointing that they're all basically the same.

I personally haven't played yet, but What do ya think about this perspective on the brittle weapons?

YouTube

So I watched this, and it's along the same lines I was talking about. But I still think it was poorly implemented. Is the best way to teach players to try new techniques really to just break their shit? Because I don't think so. I'm not a game developer so I don't know how to balance it, but it feels like they had all these fun techniques to fight with and in alpha testing discovered that spamming attack really is the easiest, quickest way to kill enemies and that there isn't really a need to use stealth or swing crates around, and they decreased weapon durability to counter it. Maybe make the durability more contextual, like blunt and wooden weapons are better for fighting armored or shielded enemies, and are more susceptible to being burned, and edged weapons are better for fighting unarmored enemies, etc. And the reality is that until much later in the game, players will be breaking weapons multiple times in big fights, causing them to stop combat and switch weapons. It's very stilted.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to do initially: hit him once to stop him from chucking ice blocks, and use that time to build a path of ice to throw bombs/bait him into an up-close flurry rush.  I was getting my ass kicked.

Nope. Turns out it's as easy as shooting him a second time.  I was expecting more of a puzzle and my problem is that it seems poorly communicated that you were supposed to just spam him.

I'm definitely going to try mindless spamming first for the rest of the bosses.

At least Vah Ruta himself was fun to fight.

I'd imagine it's less fun if you refuse to utilize the gyroscopic aiming, but yeah.

I normally hate those types of controls, but it feels great in this game.
