Well, after 1990, sure.
I know what you're trying to say, but I don't think it's a terribly good comparison, just because Mario is probably the most run-into-the-ground platformer ever, just like CoD is one of the most run-into-the-ground FPS games ever. That's all I'm saying.
Besides, I'd probably just make the argument that games like New Super Mario Bros. have ten times the innovation that any given CoD release has (and that's saying something). In terms of originality, the FPS genre is at the bottom of the barrel.
