Posted on Polygon. Even Bill Gates wasn't sold on the idea of using broadband for a console over dial-up at the time. Fun read that has some interesting tidbits of information on Xbox Live and online gaming in general that we take for granted.

The original Xbox was rather groundbreaking for what it was. It could play music stored on its built-in hard drive. System parity was of little concern to it. It had elaborate online functionality that was head and shoulders above the competition. It had self-installing DLC. But perhaps most importantly, it brought first-person shooters to popularity on consoles, and proved that Goldeneye 007 wasn't a fluke.

It could have failed in so many ways, and it almost did. Yet, it ultimately raised the standards of what was to be expected from video game consoles. Xbox Live is still the *ahem* gold standard for online services, especially compared to their miserable competition...

How could MS think it was a good idea to remove this feature? God having to stream from an additional device and have an app snapped to play music while gaming is retarded.

Here's a test on the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube. The Xbox would have still worked but the dumb bitch in this video didn't put the face back on the Xbox.

The worst part about reading this is the part with old bungie and how they and the xbl team worked together to create the modern day XBL.

Bungie is pretty much a shell of its former self now.

There are ups and downs. People come, people go. I still think that Bungie has talented people, it's just that (like I tend to think about San Andreas and Rockstar) is that they will never be capable of repeating the same kind of success. Especially seeing how the industry is going lately.
