They're 2d and objectively bad looking when placed in the game environment.

Well, this was 2007. Flame effects have gotten better within time. And in reality the textures are 2d images. That's not something that can really be changed. It's how the particle effects are simulated is what makes it believable. In this case the flames are suppose to be more of a flair. I'll admit it clearly looks better in gameplay but it can also break gameplay when equipped with camo, because you're exposed either way.

It's not prefect, but I personally like it. Reminds me of ghost rider.

Bungie's death was more of a slow, drawn-out suicide that's still taking place. A gif of the player shooting a wall with a spiker at an angle that caused the spikes to hit him would've been a much more accurate one.
