I HAVE NO MOUTH AND I MUST SCREAM

If you know, you know.
Looks like after you copy and paste a game 16 times, the 17th time screws it up.

Say what you want about sports games, but The Show always manages to provide progress between entries. They've fixed the eyes, given a variety of body builds, increased the hair style and facial hair options, improved ball handling and physics, thousands of new animations (including Red Sox antics) and added more rpg-ish aspects a la NBA 2017 to the RTTS game mode.

Out of any sports game I consider The Show to be the best franchise. For most other games the "copy/paste" joke applies but with The Show it actually feels like a very different and new game year to year. Easily my most played and most enjoyed out of any sports game.

Specifically, the copy/paste joke applies to EA Sports games. 2K sports games generally aren't bad.

street fighter gets huge patches every quarter

usually packed new characters, stages, balance changes, mechanics, game modes, model updates

we're not talking thousands of useless/pointless animation, sure, but in terms of the content itself, you're getting more extra shit with a single patch for street fighter than you are for an annual $60 MLB game

so yeah sports games are still pretty scamtastic

So how does that make it more of a scam than Doom, Street Fighter 4, or any of the other thousands of games that don't offer free post game content? It's to be commended when developers use that sort of support strategy, but it's not to be vilified when they don't. The Show games offer zero DLC outside of microtransaction currency that can be earned quite quickly by just playing the game, so it's not like there's any room for staged-release content.

>new characters
New players
>stages
Updated/classic/new stadiums
>balance changes
One of the biggest reasons why people shell out for trash like Madden: roster updates
>Mechanics
Changing how stealing bases works among other new mechanics
>game modes
Retro mode. (The Show has game modes btw, Home Run Derby is pretty fun at times)
>Model updates
Making the players not look like dolls who loath the living

I can understand not liking sports games in general, but over-exaggerating doesn't make your point.

>actually buying every single update of a sports game

im laffin, the updates are always much cooler when you have two years between them on average. Only reason I'm getting 17 is because the players look like Oblivion characters and because this iteration fixes 90% of my issues with 16. I probably won't buy another installment until 2019 or 2020.

So how does that make it more of a scam than Doom, Street Fighter 4, or any of the other thousands of games that don't offer free post game content?
Well, it's less of a scam in SFV's case because that game does offer free post-game content in the form of the aforementioned patches and updates. It's not the best example I could've used, sure, but the fact of the matter is, you're paying less for SFV updates than you are for a roster update of any sports game, and you're ultimately getting more content.

Extra characters in SFV can be paid for, but you can also unlock them for free by grinding in-game currency--which is tedious, but I have the entire game's roster (8+ DLC characters) and Capcom never got a penny from me, and they never will. Give me an opportunity to get something for free and I'm taking it.

Stages and costumes do have to be paid for, unfortunately. I'm not interested in that stuff, but if someone were, they'd ultimately be paying less for all that stuff than they would be if they purchased an MLB game every year.

And balance updates are, of course, free. That's what matters most. If characters and balance patches aren't behind a pay wall, that's the most important thing.

That said, DLC is a scam no matter what--it's just a matter of what's scammier. SF4 was pretty scammy, but it was still less scammy than a sports game franchise, because every update of the game--Super SF4, SSF4 Arcade Edition, and Ultra SF4--were all priced under $60. Every subsequent update was only $40, if I recall correctly.

Can the same be said of any sports game franchise ever?

You're not wrong in saying it's a scam, but what's the bigger scam?

Quote
The Show games offer zero DLC
Yeah, they just charge you $60 a year for the same game with minimal updates. That's almost worse than DLC.

New players in a sports game isn't really comparable to new characters in a fighting game, but I don't wanna get too deep into the intricacies. At the end of the day, the discussion is about what you personally think is worth shelling out extra money for, which I think is more subjective than the discussion meaningfully allows.

Of course, but aren't you kinda shooting yourself in the foot there?

You basically just admitted that sports games aren't worth purchasing every single year, because it takes three or four years for the incremental changes to feel at all substantial. And I agree with you.

Whereas I can give you ten franchises where you can purchase their games every single year, and I'll promise you that, even if you don't like the games in question, they offer substantially more content than you would expect to be in a simple patch or DLC update.

Only game other than SPORTS I can think of that could be close to yearly and more content would be Ass Creed or Cod and even that's debatable.

And I generally don't think it's worth buying a sports game every year. Doesn't mean that it isn't also true that The Show falls outside the copy/paste nonsense of EA Sports games. They have 9 months to do everything, yeah, but you can tell they give a shit about it instead of doing a slight line tweak and updating Madden Ultimate Team like the NFL guys at EA. If it took four years for Madden to be "worth it", then The Show would take two years.

Yeah, my mistake--most quality game franchises demand a little bit more than a year's worth of development for their content; quality over quantity and such. It's generally not a good sign if your franchise is making games too often, and that's part of my problem. Annual releases are really just part of the scam.

It should be every year, is my contention. If they MUST release a game every year, then none, zip, zero of your games should just be skippable throwaways.

I mean, that applies to all franchises, of course, but I'm just saying--sports game don't get a free pass from my or anyone else's scorn just because they release games more often. The ideal is have a new baseball game every five years, and have roster updates every season through cheap (preferably free) DLC packages or something.

That doesn't make them as much money, though, so they take the cancerous tumor route.

It also comes down to how hard of a fan you are. I enjoy baseball and The Show, but not enough to think every single change and addition is worth the price tag. Others who are much bigger fans might think differently.

Additionally, it's just another method to cover the costs of production. Considering inflation, we are getting games for a steal as-is; that's why we have to deal with microtransactions, season passes, and copious DLC. The sports game market (and some other games) decided to release yearly without DLC rather than staging the launch with DLC/season passes. Roster updates, diamond dynasty cards, seasonal items and equipment, etc are their way of supporting the game over its lifespan to ease that burden, and (like SFV) anything that could be purchased with microtransactions can easily be earned if you just play the game.

When I heard there was new commentators I feared for Matty V. cause playing MLB games since 2006 has made me so used to his voice. Hearing his voice on TV now is actually really strange but incredibly enjoyable. Plesac is fine. Reynolds I'm not excited about.

We need more commentators like Matt V. He's been so enthusiastic and excited during the WBC and has been making great calls.
