I also just think it would be an interesting and refreshing spin to see a strong, female character who happens to be unattractive. Not only would that be unique and consistent with reality—it would also make a good statement. Characters don't have to be attractive to be interesting or likable.

But you never see that. Ever. Why? Because men like ogling pretty women.

Well, that's my point. There should be more of them—male AND female.

The reason I didn't bring up males at first is because, as a heterosexual male, I don't really have the most objective concept of what an "attractive male" is. Because I don't really find any males attractive in the same way that I do with girls.

Huh. Well seeing that she is most likely a barbarian amazon-type of warrior she shouldn't be the epitome of beauty. Looks normal.

I was reminded of something the other day Verb, while playing Fable II. Actually that was a few months ago. Anyway. A character that you can certainly use as an interesting example. She wasn't the main protagonist in the story, but she was a main character.

Hammer.

Hammer, in the story, is the Hero of Strength. As a result, she's somewhat of a giant, towering over almost everybody else in the game. Not only is she shaped like a muscle bound woman, but she's weighty, partially. And throughout the game, others often make fun of Hammer for her apparent size, noting her as being troll-like and other such insults.

And, at first, Hammer comes off as seemingly dull witted, nothing more than a simple pacifist monk. But throughout the course of the game, she eventually shows an insightful, thoughtful nature. And at one point, a rival among the group who she often butts heads with, an intellectual, Garth, admits that she's not as dumb as she looks.

And she's always stood out to me as an interesting character. She's everything you wouldn't be expecting, really.
