does this stuff even work?
T4R.

Don't get me wrong, I like the lore, but it goes too deep. One of the coolest things about halo was the  mystery it had(especially surrounding the forerunner). Now, just about everything imaginable is over explained to the point where the lore gives more insight to the universe than it's primary medium, the game.

Well, yeah. Because games (shockingly) Akers a lot of time and moneyto make so they can't do too much in the story.so they do a lot more in books which are cheaper and easier.

Besides, mystery for the sake of mystery is bad writing. Mysteries are there to e solved, not so you can dance around the subject forever until everyone gets bored f the same plot lines over and over again.

Anyway. The reason 343i puts out as much cobtent as they do is because the fans want that much content. Having five novels, 12 comics and two games in a year is a lore fan's wet dream.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Its just now gotten interesting with the forerunner stuff

No, absolutely not.

I'd hate to admit it, but its a bit overwhelming.

There are 14 Halo novels I have yet to read. 14! Slow the fuck down with writing please.

Halo lost a lot of its appeal after Bear's Forerunner saga. The terminals in Halo 3 gave just enough details to intrigue us, but left out just enough to keep us wanting more.

Halo 3's terminals are the GOAT.

The forerunners were a lot more interesting when they were mysterious and long dead.

When they come into the spotlight all you get is a race of pretentious halfwits who an hero'd but couldn't even do it properly.

I don't like actually knowing what forerunners look like. Just having their names mentioned and their ruins explored made them way cooler

It doesn't help that practically everything about Halo's lore strongly suggested that we were the descendants of Forerunners. Hell, Spark literally tells us that we are. Yeah, you can retcon the line and spin it differently so that when he says Chief is a "Child of his makers," you can argue he means "Their heir," but that's definitely not what it was originally meant to convey.

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
If the Precursors were all about mimetic shit, why would they even have had physical bodies in the first place, especially permanent ones?

I came to the realization that I kinda dislike over-saturated lore in general. It makes some franchises so difficult to follow, and it creates these creepy know-it-all superfans that get livid if you get the tiniest detail wrong when talking about a movie or game. This is what happened with Star Wars, and it's happening with Halo, too.

A lot of the wonder of fictional worlds, to me, is not knowing everything, because I don't need to know everything. It's like when people got so fucking pissed over the existence of midichlorians--they didn't need to know precisely how the Force worked--they wanted to keep that childish wonder for themselves, because that's what made Star Wars fun.

Once you know everything, it's like... "Okay, now what?"

There's obviously gotta be a balance, and I think franchises like Zelda do it perfectly. It's a lore-rich franchise, but just enough is kept up in the air to keep that wonder and mystery going. I really, really value that.

I don't agree at all. I mean, sure, if you're using it as an excuse to leave some elephant in the room going completely unexplained, then that's bad writing. What I was thinking of, primarily, is this Starwarsian idea of giving every single character on-screen a name and a detailed backstory.

The same kind of thing is happening with Mad Max, which pisses me off. The Doof Warrior (flamethrower guitar dude) apparently has his own backstory. Why? Because we want to know more about him, sure, but why do we have to know more about him?... For me, it kills the novelty.

As a resident Star Wars nerd, I feel that upset was also due to the implication that your force ability was limited based on your midichlorian count. Pretty much saying that it wasn't like anyone could learn how to use the force if they were trained and had faith, you also had to have X midichlorians. Although, for sure it did suck tearing away the layer of mysticism the force had.

I didn't personally care about the midichlorians myself (considering I saw the Phantom Menace first), but from an objective standpoint, I can definitely see why that would have irked some people.

Really our problem with the prequels is that they retroactively changed the details of the original films; they changed the characters and the fiction we knew and loved. The films that released first chronologically should dictate the content of the successive films, not the other way around.

To be fair, a few Mad Max characters have had their backstory elaborated upon by Miller himself. Apparently Lord Humongous is former military, and so is Papagallo. Furthermore, it's far from all characters, I think they just elaborated upon the Doof Warrior because it was a character that was very funny and proved to be popular with audiences. They haven't given Slit (Nux's Lancer) a complex backstory or anything.

I wouldn't worry about Mad Max. I think Miller knows the value of mystery, hence why we don't know exactly how the societal collapse/apocalypse goes down; we only know bits and pieces. Just enough to keep us intrigued.

I was more referring to the large scale stuff. In halo, you spend most of your time poking through forerunner structures for whatever reason. You're going to have to address forerunners at some point instead of just dodging the issue or blowing up whatever artefact was about to tell us everything we wanted. That's what most people mean when they say there's no mystery in Halo. With something that is such an integral part of the franchise, you're going to have to acknowledge them at some point.

But I get your point on the flamethrower guy.
