I kind of look at it from a narrative standpoint.
If a character relationship could be replaced with a heterosexual version and it has no effect on the story, there's no significance in it being a homosexual relationship, it's just there because it is. That's not meaningful or exciting.

Do I think that all universes need to have homophobic undertones? No, but if you want to make it anything more than being as generic and boring as any heterosexual relationship would be in its place, then it has to add some dynamic to the way characters interact with each other and the story.
I think the opposite. If a hetero relationship can be replaced with a homosexual relationship, that's great and goes to show just how similar they really are. When it comes down to it, homo couples are no different than hetero couples.
If they're so similar, why does it matter that they are there? What interesting perspective do they bring if they're functionally identical in a story? Does it come down to wanting to be able to get off voyeuristically?
Sometimes it's just nice to change things up a bit. Not everything needs to be read into and secretly means something else. If you're LGBT, it's nice to play games with LGBT themes and characters sometimes, because more often than not, the characters and themes in movies, tv shows, games, and books, are not LGBT.

Does that mean the story will be drastically different? No.

What, same-sex romances can't be believable? Them not working as a straight relationship would make it extremely likely that it actually is tokenism, unless the writing is really good and the creator is trying to make some point through it.
If the way their relationship works is different than the generic heteronormative shit that usually gets projected onto them then that probably means the author wrote a story with the circumstances in mind and them being homosexual is something that helps govern the story, not something that is tacked on for extra points.

Quote
If a fictional relationship would work just as well as a straight or gay relationship, then why is the gay one tokenism? Surely if they're the same there's literally no difference except that the one that matches your own orientation is more easy to identify with.
Because lazy hetero relationships are an old as dirt, ubiquitous convention. Lazy homo relationships are becoming more of a trend now that you get extra points just for making a homo relationship appear.
IMO

And if the two are so similar, isn't which you identify with basically a matter of fetishization?
You're heterosexual you're aroused by heterosexual acts and enjoy that.
You're homosexual you're aroused by homosexual acts and enjoy that.

I guess people only romanced in ME to fap anyways so uh...
You just don't understand, do you? Homo relationships aren't that different from hetero relationships. But that doesn't mean that seeing hetero relationships everywhere when you're not straight isn't a bit tiresome.

Some people want these games. Therefore there is a need for a curator that makes finding them easier. Does it really matter why people want to play them on a personal level? You're obviously not LGBT, so why do you even care enough to protest it?

I don't see why including LGBT characters or themes is "politically correct"

Probably because lesbians historically have been seen as more acceptable than gay men.

And there's the whole thing with straight dudes being turned on by lesbians but not gay men, and video games mainly being marketed towards straight dudes.

If it aligns with your views then it's relateable. If it aligns with the views of others then it's pandering.

Why can't people just enjoy inclusive games without straight white boys yelling at them?

Why do people get salty about an LGBT curator, but if there was a curator for "games with dragons" or "puzzle games" you wouldn't give a shit?

Because people don't make posts about those.
And puzzle games actually give you an idea of what the game is like.

Pretty sure posting the furry curator somewhere would get you a chorus of "yiff in hell"

I'm just saying IMO it's silly to care so much about something so small enough to go looking for games with it as a criteria.

YOU might think it's something small, but to a group to that's so under-represented in media, especially games, it's something nice for them.

not being able to relate to characters because of sexuality is DUMB unless the game is already sexual in nature

You do to some degree if you relate better to a character that aligns with your own.

Stories that take place in states I've lived in resonate better with me, too, but that doesn't mean that I don't play games that don't take place in California. Having a deeper connection to a game makes it more enjoyable to play. Nobody said they won't play/can't connect to a game that doesn't have LGBT themes or characters.

But it isn't huge. The only people making a big deal about it are people who don't like it.

When I play a game with LGBT characters, it's more of a "huh, that's neat" than HOLY FUCKING SHIT YES MOTHERFUCKER! SOME GAY SHIT ALL UP IN THIS BITCH!

When you look for games with it as your criteria it definitely goes beyond "oh neat".

Yeah man, all those straight white cishet males throwing temper tantrums over tokenism, alienating their community and causing general shit storms across the gaming sphere. It's practically endemic.

Oh, wait.

You're the one who said that homosexual relationships are very similar to heterosexual ones.
Unless you mean the difference between being able to identify with homo or hetero romance is whether or not it arouses you, which is inherently sexual in nature.

And I don't really feel like I naturally identify with a character better just because they fit my demographic, that's pretty shallow. Has a lot more to do with personality or struggles they go through.

Which in a lot of games there aren't realistic representations of struggles lgbt go through, they're put in and it doesn't change the story or the way the character works at all. Like in Mass Effect Lopez or whoever the pilot was could have literally just replaced all the pronouns for his hubby with a female and it'd change the story zilch IIRC. Of course in ME homosexual relationships are supposed to be normal, but nothing about this inclusion is anything worth making a list about or really even mentioning.
