Is it just me, or have Internet guides and videos made gaming less fun? Developers don't help either.  Games having established "metas" just kills fun sometimes and it seems like devs just seem to make it worse. It's most evident in MMOs and MOBAs.

It kills creativity or trying to devise new strategies. People just use what the most popular youtuber or what the pro guide says to do. For example in league of legends if you don't go tank top, burst mid, support and ad bot you get crucified. Sure this SEEMS to be the most ideal way to play but nobody bothers experimenting to see if there are any other viable combos. And God forbid you try a build that isn't the top one on mobafire.

As I said before devs facilitate this too. Look at MMOs. Basically every MMO ever is just a tank getting Aggro, a healer spamming heal and buffs, and then 2dps plinking away at their health.

This is basically a pointless rant but does anybody agree? I just wish devs would incentivize creativity

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Yup. That and try hards.

the best word I can think of it is cookie cutter. There's only one way or the highway.  Which is a shame because I think MOBAs and MMOs are cool concepts

Gaming, across a wide array of definitions is failing to innovate.

It is a very homogeneous industry.

Smash Bros is a sandbox fighting game of sorts.
You make your own combos

the thing about Pokemon is the tiers are really fluid. If you're clever enough or build a good team lower teir Pokemon can work just fine. I've swept many teams with scyther or a shiftry

Metas are just the most efficient and effective way to play a game. Every game will develop some sort of meta at one point.

the problem is for so many games that's the ONLY way there's any incentive to play

Metas eventually happen in their own right. Eventually, a player will come to realize the best way to do things if they take the game a little more seriously.

Take Halo 3 on legendary. Arguably, your best friend was a plasma pistol or rifle for shields, and a headshot weapon, prefferably a rifle. But I understand your point.

What excessively irks me is when devs make shit weapons. You're always going to have the players who play to meta gameplay. And then the crowd of players that don't really care or are actually skilled and challenge themselves with less common weapons.

And then you have the weapon teir that is so shit, there's no fucking point. Nobody, no matter how skilled, or wanting of a challenge, would use that equipment.

What the fuck is the point? Why waste time making a weapon that's clearly shit?

Or, or! God forbid something is called OP in number and it goes from being a meta to having Thor drop his hammer on it so that it falls into the useless category.

Any game with a tier of weapons will have metas, always. But I really can't fathom how everybody and their grandmother using, and doing the exact same fucking thing is fun, to anybody.

I play dark souls a fair bit. And the DS community is known for metas.

At least, in dark souls, most weapons are balanced well enough so that a smart player can overcome a higher tier weapon. But it seriously gets old when you jump into a match, and you see somebody buffing twice, once for a defense imuunity buff, and once for a weapon buff, while stacking the same armour, same weapon, and same spells over and over again so that every match becomes a dull experience, even if you win.

Then again though, gaming is an escape. And we all know, that most people can be rather simple. They don't challenge themselves or anything. They go from point A, to point B in a straight line.

Metas will always be around but I agree that when too many people use it for the sake of ease, simplicity, and the devs cater to that, it gets old really fucking quick.

i like metas

but i've never heard of anyone ever getting "crucified" for "breaking the meta" (i don't play too many modern games)

not since ssb: melee have i seen people give others shit for wanting to play as weaker characters as opposed to the top ten in the meta

if anything, in all the games i play that have established metas (pokemon, street fighter, smash) people tend to respect players who "break the meta" and play as low-tier characters, admiring their fortitude and creativity, because you have to be creative to do anything worthwhile with a weak character

i actually hear more whining from people who think that "tier whores" are trying to impose tiers on everyone, and marginalize their favorite characters by calling them "useless" and shit

when the reality is, no one's imposing anything and you can do whatever the fuck you want

but like i said, i don't play any MMOs like LoL, but i mean, who gives a shit if you'll get "crucified" for playing in an unorthodox way? it's shitty that people seem to react that way, but i mean, shouldn't that incentivize you to prove them wrong?

it would for me

That's why I only play it with my friends. We just come up with our own fun strategies.

We use stuff that the super serious battlers says isn't very good and we make it work against each other.

If you wanna try a MMO that's different you might wanna try EVE. It's an open world MMO and a whole lot different the the others. I enjoy it alot, it's difficult to learn though.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
I guess the same applies to other game types too, i.e. FPS's.

MW2, you only shot yourself in the foot if you got an F2000 or an Uzi and tried to roll with it, but was highly respected (if you can call it that) if you got a Nuke or the higher tier camo's for it showing your proficiency (although this later just became "ah, just a fucking hacker").

Gears, you need dat Gnasher to have even a hope in hell to be a useful member of your team. Oddly enough though, using a Retro Lancer would get you some serious hate, and using the Hammerburst proficiently would brand you a hacker.

Fallout 3/NV, certain perks are completely useless when you think about it or a guidebook tells you, i.e. the Comprehension, Swift Learner, or Here and Now perks wastes a perk choice for that level, so why bother using them? Then you see Melee only playthrus on youtube that get a bit of fame, but even then they are picking specific perks that they know extremely boost the power of the those measly fists to something more powerful than a shotgun at close range.

GTA V, before the heists and subsequent updates had a swamping of jobs like Lester's Diamond job because it gave the best $/time ratio, while Simeon's missions were avoided like the Black Death.

Don't even get me started on Runescape...the number of bots in the efficient areas to gather resources/xp and bank them is insane, to the point that any shared resource areas (trees, ores, mob drops) on the fringe of the "efficient zone" are actually now far easier to obtain.

I guess these examples may come down to balancing issues, poor map design/layout or the general grinding gameplay of some games, but I guess it makes sense. If a game relies on grinding for the better goodies (like many MMORPG's do), you're going to get people finding the most resourceful method of getting to it quickly and then being copied to the point of total ruin of the other game features, or a call for a patch to balance it, only for the cycle to repeat again. We have only human nature and the german-level-efficiency of some people (that totally may or may not be Germans) to blame for Metas in games.

Sorry, but even EVE has a meta when it comes down to fleet engagements. You can't just throw together a kitchen sink and expect to take on a doctrine fleet that's around the same competency level.

I think there's a pretty large counter-culture in gaming specifically seeing to avoid metas. Just look at Dark Souls, or really any sandbox game that lets you screw with builds. In a competitive atmosphere, it just makes sense to follow strategies.

Whenever something enters the PvP territory there will be metas, stuff that's generally considered as OP (or even as exploits for that matter); BxR, Giantdad, FMG akimbo, Mega Rayquaza...
