When playing a new game how much time do you give it before deciding if it's worth to continue playing/returning to the store? Are there any games with slow starts that you loved later?

If it's a game people have been recommending me, or if I want to give it an HONEST shot, I say a few hours. 3 hours for me, I think. Enough time to get past whatever tutorial crap is thrown at you, and enough to get into the heart of the game. If I'm just not feeling it, I'll give up, but if I have SOMETHING that interests me, I'll try to stay interested.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
Depends on how much I'm enjoying it. There are some games that I only decide are shit after like eight hours, then others I can't play for more than thirty minutes.

NieR is the defining example of "it gets better" being true.

I generally know within an hour of playing the game whether I'm going to enjoy it or not.

Half-Life 2--projected rating (one hour of gameplay): 8-9/10. actual rating 7/10 (revising to an 8)
Halo: CE--projected rating: 4-6/10. actual rating: 5/10
Fallout 3--projected rating: 6-8/10. actual rating: 7/10 (revising to a 6)
Wind Waker--projected rating: 7-9/10. actual rating: 10/10
Pokémon Moon--projected rating: 7-8/10. actual rating: 7-8/10.

Even if a game has a "slow" start, it's easy to gauge within a short amount of time through small details and tone-setting whether a game will end up being great or not. I can't think of a game that has surprised me too heavily, unless it was in a negative way (SSB Brawl: projected rating, 10/10. actual rating: 4-6/10).

fuck you
Games I'm recommended, and I get recommended a lot, I tend to play the full thing, but if I don't like them I find out early on. That's when I'll stop playing.

The Witcher 3 was a good one, I wasn't really feeling the start, didn't care for the story and didn't enjoy the combat, as I started to get use to it and got further in, I really enjoyed the game and characters.

In terms of it gets better, as Prime said, NieR is probably the living example of that. I'd argue DoD too

Wasn't the major defense of Ff-13 that it gets good once you're like 20+ hours in?
I totally get slow starts in games, it's the reason I can put up with Custom Robo's 15 effing minute long intro, but these niggas are talking about AN ENTIRE DAY worth of bad gameplay to get to something that MIGHT be entertaining . nah

The issue with the defense isn't that it takes so ling, it's that it's completely false. FFXIII never gets better. It's always shit.

Goodness gracious, great balls of lightning!
Far Cry 3

I played it for a few hours and I didn't like it. Came back to it a few weeks later and ended up enjoying the hell out of the game.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Sometimes it's as simple as playing a mission or two after the tutorial.

Other times it depends on whether the game's the problem or if I'M the problem (usually by not reading the instructions properly and royally fucking things up with hiw I play), which can take a while.

the one true God is Doctor Doom and we should all be worshiping him.
It has to be good the instant I put the disc in or I take it back in a rage and demand a refund at gunpoint.

I'd argue DoD too
Taro knows what he's doing, even if he doesn't remember it. Caim is literally one of my favorite protagonists of all time, and I was considering dropping DoD1 during the first level. Only Angelus commenting on Caim's destructive nature kept me anchored, and it's perhaps one of the best decisions I've made. The game was a clunky mess, but it's the characters that make it.

I feel like I'm on the shorter end of waiting to see if it will get better later. I think I'll try Dishonored again and give it another chance.
