I never said anything was wrong with Bethesda trying new things, I just said that settlements were gimmicky. There isn't really much to do with them other than build and occasionally kill a group of enemies for them. I would have preferred to have had one large settlement with a more in-depth management system and more unique NPC settlements rather than 30 settlements, many of which are just ignored, a dull system and only 2 major towns.
Fallout 4 has 3 major towns: Diamond City, Goodneighbor, and Bunker Hill

Fallout 3 also only had 3: Rivet City, Megaton, and Tenpenny Tower.

So not sure what you're on about
Fallout 3 also has Underworld, Paradise Falls, Big Town, Little Lamplight, Canterbury Commons, and a few smaller towns.
If you're going to count all of those, then you also have to count the small towns in Fallout 4. Not only the many small encampments where traders are abound, but the faction housing like Old North Church, the Prydwen, the Institute, all the Minutemen bases, etc. And essentially, any settlement you create will eventually turn into an actual town, complete with doctors and trading, if you build it up enough.
I'm talking settlements with unique characters, not settlements with nameless NPCs you can trade with.
Why?

Fallout 3 is sidequest oriented, Fallout 4 is main/faction quest oriented. Each Fallout 3 town has maybe one big quest tied to it, all of the Fallout 4 towns have many quests tied to them. Especially the faction quests.

And yes, F4's main quest is kickass. Far better than "oh, you're locked into being a good guy and working against the Enclave" like in Fallout 3.
Except you're not locked into being a good guy. You can carry out Eden's plans if you want. You can blow up Megaton if you want. You can try to bring peace to Tenpenny Tower or massacre its residents or massacre the ghouls. It's not like Fallout 4 where no matter what you do you're still a parent looking for their son. There's nothing truly evil you can do except for selling that ghoul kid to the Gunner. As I said, you're either the good guy or the good guy on a bad day.
Except not at all. You HAVE to be part of the BoS, you HAVE to work with your father, and the only diversion in the main quest you can have is irradiating the purifier at the last second. Which, as Broken Steel shows, does pretty much nothing anyway. It's a linear questline.

In Fallout 4, the main story beats are mirrored with each faction, sure, but the way it's played out and who you're fighting against is completely up to the player. If you hate the Brotherhood of Steel and you're playing Fallout 3 - too bad! If you hate the Brotherhood of Steel and you're playing Fallout 4, you can make the whole game about taking them down.

And it's funny you criticize the linear start of the Fallout 4 when Fallout 3 is an even worse offender. I see all these people bitching about "b-but I don't want to look for my son, how DARE the game predetermine my motives!" when Fallout 3 has the same exact problem, but with your boring father instead of your son.

There's no branching in the main quest but there are still choices you have to make. Do you free the children from Paradise Falls or avoid saving them through persuasion in order to access Little Lamplight? How do you deal with Tranquility Lane? Do you help Three Dog fix GNR or persuade him to give you information? They're not big choices but they're still there and help to shape your character. As for sabotaging the purifier, it's hardly going to have any major effects only two weeks after it happens. If you drink the water after Broken Steel, you die anyway. Fallout 4 completely invalidates all of Fallout 3 anyway considering you can build a better purifier out of a couple sticks and some tin cans.

As for the Brotherhood thing, I never said Fallout 3's main quest was perfect because it's far from it. There should have been more focus on the conflict between the Outcasts and the Brotherhood, enabling you to choose between them. You should have been able to side with the Enclave. But you couldn't, which is one of the parts where Fallout 3's MQ sucks.

I didn't even criticise the linear start of Fallout 4. I criticised the character you're given to play. You're either a former soldier who's looking for his son or a lawyer who's looking for her son. They're a lot more restricted than a young vault dweller whose father ran away. Your father isn't even the reason why you leave; you leave because the Overseer is corrupt as fuck and looking for you. Once you do leave, you can do whatever you want without being constantly told to care about your father. You can resent him for abandoning you if you want, and be a bit of a dick to him if you do go out looking for him. It's not as time-sensitive as looking for your infant son. You're only really reminded about your dad if you talk to an NPC who recognises him in you. As for the rest of the start section, sure it's linear but it still helps to shape what kind of person you'll be. You can be a dick to Amata and pick on her with the Bullies, you can kill the Overseer and alter the Trouble on the Homefront quest later on. It follows a linear path but doesn't force you into a particular role.

At the end of the day I'm just arguing one shitty main quest over another shitty main quest. They've both got parts that suck but also have their own redeeming features.

tbh I wish they had both ended up better.

I started a playthrough with the alternate start mod and started on the shipwreck near Spectacle Island, survival mode. I decided that I'd spend the entire playthrough on the island and did up the farm all nice and shit. But then I didn't have circuitry to make the recruitment beacon so that I'd have settlers to manage it, and I couldn't find any on the island or the surrounding platforms so I drowned myself.

10/10

Okay I'm back and kinda scrolled through that argument. Yeah, not having that conversation for the 60th time. I'd just like to say that picture of Necropolis as compared to how Fallout 3 looked is a good comparison yeah.

I was looking at FO 1/2 in game pictures as well, and I feel NV keeps more true to it than any other Fallout game. 3 I like it because it captured the 50's look. NV obviously for what it did.

I dunno, just didn't like it with 4 as much. I'd argue the only things I did like that I felt captured it was the diners that looked like something you'd see from the 50's. And I know it's like, the most miniscule thing to complain about, but I don't like how they changed the look of items in 4. Nuka Cola looks stupid now (I honestly preferred when it was just Coke), the med-kit packs look stupid and not like the cool square ones, the water looks insanely weird, etc.

It's just small things that build up. I also think just Boston as a location is insanely boring in this game too. It didn't feel nearly as engaging to me as Fallout 3 did for a lot of reasons. Maybe because the Metro's are missing? I always honestly enjoyed the creepy ambiance that stuff gave off. It just felt more... idk, grounded in reality to me. More immersive. I can't really explain it.

Canned water is a real thinh from real cold war era boston. It was actually given out and looked similar to that in game.

Otherwise, I imagine some changes in art direction come from one of the senior artists passing away after FO3's release. He was responsible for a lot of FO3 stuff like the Enclave's PA.

And that Enclave rabbit ears shit from F3 looked terrible. X-01 is much more in line with the original Enclave design from F2.

Apparently, some people are stealing mods from nexus and uploading them to Bethesda.net. This is utterly unacceptable behavior on their part, and some modders have decided to quit due to this. It's the prerogative of the mod maker to decide whether or not they want to release their mod to console. It's quite saddening to see a few potentially ruin console mods for the rest of the console players.

Well the Enclave version looked a lot better. Though the only full-body images of midwestern armour I'm aware of are the slightly goofy scale of in-game graphics (ie the humans are really wide-shouldered and stuff).

I more meant that the APAMKII armour is just as grounded in a 'classic' design as X-01.

I wouldn't mind a more HD version though. Updated with modern graphics would be cool.

Can't say I'm surprised. The same thing happened to Nexus modders when steam workshop happened and then happened again during that brief period of paid modding.

Using F4SE to crash a console players game for using a stolen mod is a pretty good idea though. If that becomes standard practice for Nexus modders it should reduce the rate at which mods are stolen.

I wholeheartedly support modders using F4SE to stop people porting them to console. You can usually tell it's stolen if there's no images for the mod and the name/ description are anything but. Thankfully, Bethesda are taking down stolen content fairly quickly, which is good.

The business of stealing mods is disgusting, even moreso when it's only being done to spite PC modders who are (Rightfully) pissed about the twatbrigade of people wh have no idea what modding entails constantly demanding mods be ported over to xbox/ playstation. Especially when there's a genuine technical reason (Using copyrighted material, stuff that breaks bethesda TOS, requires script extender etc) for not porting them.

I can't wait to get my PC build done so I can do the stuff that isn't available on Xbox.

Stealing mods is wrong obviously, but god damn the modding community has some real menstruating snowflakes in it. Someone stole my mod? Rather than file a report/copyright claim I'm just gonna poison all of my mods, hide some, delete some and whine about it on nexus.

I can understand putting extra protection into your mod, sure. But poisoning them to crash people's machines out of spite? What a sad cunty little thing to do, you don't poison all the bread in your fucking bakery because some little toerag stole a loaf from you.

Grow the fuck up and deal with theft like a man jesus christ.
