i found confident travis pretty boring and unmemorable.

there wasn't really any feeling like walking into a building in fallout 3 and hearing three dog's voice echoing around it

mr new vegas is better than both of them anyway

There was a mod for Fallout 4 that added in a station with a robotic Christopher Walken as a host.

i just realised the radius just about misses most of fallout 4's map aside from the northwestern portion, but whatever

looks like bethesda saved fallout 7 years ago, we just had to make the sacrifice of making aliens canon :(

Just the immediate blast radius. Shockwaves, dust clouds, heat damage and so forth would do a great deal more damage.

Fallout 4 had the best original factions of any game since 2

The Institute is far more interesting than Caesar's Legion

The Gunners are more interesting than the Fiends

started off as a dumb but somewhat humourous nod to wasteland, then fallout 4 fucking went overboard with that shit

The Institute is so layered and interesting. They literally want to replace humanity with humanity 2.0, and geniunely see their actions as altruistic and necessary. Not to mention the great writing that went into the delusions of Father. You can really believe that he thinks he's the savior of mankind. And even though he's obviously wrong that synths aren't sentient, you can see his point of view. Compare that to glorified raiders with a hard on for history.

The Gunners are the most successful and powerful mercenary group in the series. The fact that they're a hair away from being raiders is a great parallel and pointed out constantly by the characters. Far more interesting than "lol fiends are so fucked up on drugs lol XD lets write a bunch of evil rape shit to make the player hate them"

The Railroad is one of the single best Fallout factions. One of the actual selfless ones (in the same vein as the Followers), but also cynical and pragmatic. Like any ideal, they can never truly be stamped out, even though they're greatly outmatched by the Institute and BoS. If you wipe out their HQ for either faction, it's implied the movement lives on, because that's the nature of the group. They don't stand and fight to the last man like a cliche honor squad, they live to fight another day. All in all an expertly designed faction.

The CoA is scary, they were never meant to be some funny thing. Fallout desperately needed a faction built around a religion, and it's a stroke of genius to have the religion revolve around the Great War itself. The fact you don't like the FO4 iteration of the CoA just shows how truly entrenched you are in your blind hate for the game.

what does this mean. "mankind redefined"? their synth slave workforce? pointless. we have mr handys for that who can do many different tasks at once. synths made even more pointless by the fact that bethesda decided to give mr handys full on human-like artificial intelligence. why would you give things designed to be slaves the ability to think freely anyway.

synth harambes? still not the real thing.

hey guys we're stealing a baby from a vault of cryogenically sleepy people but we gotta leave ONE of them alive as a backup so why not leave the one alive who's MOST likely to come and seek revenge on us and fuck our shit up

Not to mention the fact that the other advances the Institute has made are rendered entirely useless by the other games and Fallout 4 itself.

Institute BioScience? The Shi created a radiation-absorbing plant decades ago that cleared the entire San Francisco area of radiation. Not only that, but before the Institute started fucking about the reactor the Shi were finding new ways to synthesize a new fuel using seaweed and aquatic life as well as building their own nuclear reactors.
Teleportation? The Think Tank has that covered.
Synth army? What's wrong with Sentry bots and Assaultrons who proved to be much more of a nuisance to me than any courser did?
Robotics in general? Think Tank again.
Father has cancer? Damn, we're fucked, not like there's a virus that grants immunity to disease (which the institute has a serum for reversing the mutation), a scientist who achieved immortality or a Miss Nanny who singlehandedly cured every single disease affecting humanity using vault resources. Shame the Institute with their centuries of scientific research can't do anything. May as well pass over leadership to some guy we just met even if he fucked us over at bunker hill.

also the institute probably makes GMOs

Quote
Compare that to glorified raiders with a hard on for history.
You mean the nutty professors who can't figure out what their goals are are more "layered" and "interesting" than a man who used his educated background to take advantage of the tribes of the wasteland and use them to build a massive post-war society modeled on one of the most powerful empires in history in order to challenge the flawed old-world ideology of the NCR while still managing to restore order to large portions of the wasteland? the faction that actually presents a pretty frightening threat to the wasteland yet hinges on the survival of its leader due to the way he's built it up?

Quote
The Gunners are the most successful and powerful mercenary group in the series.
you mean, just raiders but more heavily armed? just fallout 4's version of talon company? the only interaction you have with them is getting shot on sight? why would you compare them to the fiends anyway who are just a raider group operating in western vegas (although you can actually talk to the fiends if you convince them that you're a drug dealer)?

Quote

dude toasters more important than people lmao

ran by a load of idiots. dude lets blow up the institute and save only about 20 synths lmao instead of taking advantage of father's stupidity and using the sole survivor's eventual status as a leader to steer the institute towards a more desirable path, acting like an actual underground organisation, changing the institute from within. actually do some good for the wasteland rather than saving a few slaves and not having a long term plan

Quote

wait, so confessor cromwell wasn't just obligatory bethesda preacher man?

Quote

i agree, fallout™ has never had a faction based around religion before

Quote
a stroke of genius to have the religion revolve around the Great War itself.
a stroke of genius to have a religion worshipping a nuke, something even the master, the most evil being in the franchise, completely despised and feared himself, something that was established to be a universally hated thing before bethesda went all DUDE NUKES LMAO on the series

What the fuck? Did you even play the game? The Institute wants to completely get rid of humans and replace them with synths. Mankind - Redefined. Their eventual goal is one where carbon-based humans don't even exist. That's a far more interesting villain than a bunch of history-obsessed raiders.

The Railroad wants to free literal slaves. Synths are sentient/sapient, they're far from toasters. They're people. The fact that the Institute is blown up is bad quest design, not bad faction writing. The only faction that would want the Institute completely blown up is the BoS, but the way Bethesda writes their quests, it's the same quest with different small details.

Speaking of, the BoS, Followers, and Children were not religions. The BoS and Followers worship an ideal, and the Children worship a tangible being. I forgot about the Bright Brotherhood and Hubologists, but they're both small-time compared to the major role the CoA have. Hubologists are hardly even a "faction" - they're a joke meant to poke fun at Scientology. And the idea of worshipping atoms and nuclear detonations is extremely compelling. They believe every atom is a universe, and by splitting them, you're creating infinitely more universes.

And no, it's not a dumb statement. It's no secret you hate every facet of FO4 in some attempt to look cool. Even the best parts of the game, the factions and companions.

Lol the Gunners are completely backstoryless. Other than the immediate history of them (some terminals with some inter-mail conversations and basic reports of the surrounding area, pretty shallow stuff), they have about as much story and lore as Talon Company... speaking of which, where the fuck did they go. At least they had their own sets of armour.

The only "goldmine" of information about themselves is at Quincy ruins, where they mention the short battle between the original minutemen in terminals (Preston gives better detail if you ask), and another talking about how one named Gunner, Tessa, was a raider originally.

It's a shame really. They could've developed more about them (not just have you kill some more as part of MacCready's story), or just had Talon Company return considering they operate north of them.

I can't explain it. But I don't like Fallout 4 as much as 3 or NV. I enjoyed 3's story more. And obviously, that goes for NV as well. I liked the UI on the old ones more. I'm not sure if I'm against a voiced character, but the old dialogue system was MUCH better. I liked the box UI more, and there was more to choose from. I also enjoyed exploring the worlds more than Fallout 4. Especially Fallout 3. It had more interesting side quests too IMO. I waited years for this game. And it just disappointed me. Even though I still enjoyed it. And got almost 4 days of play out of it. Still not done with Nuka World either. It almost seems like Bethesda just didn't put as much effort in as they could. Skyrim is a better game than Fallout 4 IMO. And if they don't stop using that POS Gamebryo engine! Ugh.

There is something definitely wrong with my Fallout saves, or the game somehow.

It's like every second day I get an "unexpected error" that crashes it. Thankfully this happens so much I habitually quicksave every 5 minutes and have autosaves every 10.

And this is with the damned perfect unaltered mod-free PS4 version.

Also wrote-up a reply for something to do with pre-made voiced characters and their place (or lack of) in Fallout. Kinda long, but take a read:

Spoiler
Quote
It seems to me that while previous characters had pasts, these were largely passive or independent from the player. Fallout 4 seems to have assumed some choices for the character already as if they had taken the initiative, which is a tad problematic depending on who you want your character to be.

E.g.

Fallout 1 - You live in a vault and someone sends you out to fix the broken water chip. Everybody needs water to survive, so while it's a backstory, it's something important that anyone from any background can get behind.

Fallout 2 - You're a member of a tribe and someone sends you to solve the famine. That's a pretty good start out, as nobody enjoys a famine. Same as above.

Fallout 3 - You live in a vault (of which you have control of the player during stages of his/her life), until your Dad leaves. Everyone alive has/had a father, and the intro is set so that you can either be a dick to your Dad ("You left me to die there!") or catch up and reconnect ("I understand because you want to help the Wasteland have water"), and his death soon after you catch up is hardly an influence on your story for your character. The main quest is a bit of a stretch depending on how you want to play your character, but that's another matter.

Fallout NV: You're a courier who is delivering a package, only to get hijacked and shot in the head. From here you can take the story as a loyal package delivery boy/girl and reclaim the package, or as revenge and kill your assailant... or get caught up in everything else because you hated the job and there's a problem in Goodsprings that looks like a good distraction. From the get-go you have very little backstory, hell, even why you took the job is left up to you (Was I your average NCR citizen, a Vegas-born independent, a sufferer of amnesia brought on by the injury, or a retired raider intending to enjoy retirement with some honestly earned caps?).

Fallout 4 - You're a Pre-War army vet./lawyer who has a son, until the war begins and you're SO is killed and your son stolen... woah woah woah slow down there... It's already set up some major backstory elements, such as your job (a pre-war vet is going to have some pre-war knowledge, combat training, etc, while a lawyer would have... speech skills, charisma?), your sexual orientation (if I'm straight from the get-go, why would a nuclear holocaust and 200 years in a freezer turn me gay/lesbian/bisexual?), even your choice to have children is taken from you (may not sound like much, but if the whole story revolves around something which you've decided your character either doesn't care about or would never do in the first place, the whole thing is moot), as well as where you'd decide to create a settlement for yourself (If I lived there 200 years ago and had a knowledge of the area before the bombs, why would I choose to live anywhere else but Sanctuary?)

Being Pre-war also creates another problem. While Boston is big, wouldn't I know some notable pre-war locations, and even some of the skeletons/ghouls littered around the area, would that change my stance on how to treat ferals (much like the group that sheltered in Kiddie Kingdom at Nuka World; treating ferals as "an affliction" that could be treated because I might have once knew them.

All of these are some serious hoops to jump through and require some good mental gymnastics or a complete abandonment of a character because the background has already been set-out for me. This comes before I've even gotten on to the voiced character, which can shatter the already shaky illusion I wanted to create for a certain character. If I wanted to create a Black-Gay-Irish raider-type character just for the sake of it, the backstory and the voice throw all these out the window, and so my hands are tied to somehow explain it all down to PTSD and that I suffered a stroke that changed my voice.

Don't get me wrong here, the voice actors were good (especially making one of the sarcastic options literal), but unfortunately it clashes with how I want to play my character, and future characters in the long run.

Pre-made, voiced characters (or characters with far too much backstory created for them) have little place in a game that intends to be other than the main story, an open sandbox of possibilities. The only solution would be a selection of voices, an increase in the number of lines from every one, or a silent protagonist and a selection of text options, the former being VERY expensive.
