It's involuntary. If I hear from one of my friends, "X was an amazing movie," and I haven't heard anything about it, the one thing I know is that one of my friends thought it was amazing. Since we're friends, we probably have like interests, so that means I'm more likely to enjoy it, too.

So, recklessly, I watch it and it sucks because my expectations were raised too high.
