A "freedom to privacy", to me, seems like a necessary corollary of a freedom to expression. Which I think we all value, here.
well, personally, i just don't value it at all

it's just a fundamental... thing, i guess
Would you say then that you take your freedom for granted?

well, no, because i don't need privacy, either

it's not like how i take my shoes for granted, because i wear them every single day, and if i had them taken away from me, i'd be like, "well, fuck, this sure fucking sucks"

if i had my privacy taken away, it wouldn't change anything, because i was never remotely a private person at all

Irrelevant.

We live in a thoroughly irrational society, in some respects.

so i should hide from an irrational and intolerant authority and remain in lockstep instead of saying, "no, fuck you, i like this, and i'm going to bolster my right to like this"

i'd get locked up or murdered

That's exactly my point. The ideas of freedom of expression and, on the flip-side, freedom to privacy are essentially safe-guards against such magnitudes of irrationality so that you never have to martyr yourself.

if you're not willing to martyr yourself for your own freedom of expression... well, i'm not gonna say you're a pussy, but i do respect the person who will fight a lot more than someone who would refuse

it's hard not to look down on someone--that is to say, 99% of humans--who wouldn't fight

I know, and I understand that there is a certain basic disagreement there. I'm just asking questions so that the complete logic can be shared so that it isn't 64 pages of disagreement.

So, you admit that your lack of perceived value in privacy is not the most common view? Are there any reasons why you might believe, or disbelieve, in that value?

So, you admit that your lack of perceived value in privacy is not the most common view? Are there any reasons why you might believe, or disbelieve, in that value?
It's definitely not the common view, but as you know, I don't really think much of the common person.

As for reasons as to why I disbelieve in the value... I mean, it's not that I disbelieve the value, it's that I don't consider it a value at all. I place no value on privacy, and if I think I've already sort of given enough reasons as to why, but I guess I'll just sort of wrap it up in a bow.

So, again, number one, it's because I have nothing to be ashamed of. I've given my name, because names are essentially worthless. I've given my image, because my image is essentially worthless. I've even given my fucking address. Why? I don't know, you tell me whether or not I should be afraid of some punk kid over the Internet--because I'm not. A lot of people here like to make fun of my hair--whatever, that's their right. Why should I be embarrassed? I like my hair the way it is, and if I want to cut it, I will.

Like I said before, though--there is a line. If someone uses my image against me in some way, that's a violation. That's why I get so fucking pissed when people start using my name against me, or my image against me, when they themselves are too much of a P U S S Y to give me THEIR name, to give me THEIR image, so I can get good and personal with them as well. They value their right to privacy so much, and yet they'll do shit like that. And I did the same to them, their hearts would probably fucking collapse, because they're a bunch of pusillanimous children with no integrity.

I'd take a picture of anything that I own and show it to anyone who cares enough--it's who I am, and I will be accountable. No one should be embarrassed of who they are. No one should be ashamed. No one should feel like a bad person.

If you are embarrassed? Get over it.
If you are ashamed? Fix that.
If you're a bad person? Stop being a bad person.

If we dropped our silly egocentric notions--this idea that we have this reputation to live up too--"Oh no, he found out that I like to masturbate to rape porn"--if anyone honestly gives a cunt about that stuff, if they're gonna stop respecting you over stuff like that, then who needs them?

The only time I'd care, the only time anyone should care, in my opinion, is if you're hiding a body under the floorboards. And if that's your circumstance, then yeah, you should be afraid--maybe you shouldn't have been a murderous psychopath. But I think it's safe to assume that you're not.

edit:
I didn't proofread that, so I apologize for any mistakes or irrelevant ramblings...

As an addendum, accounting for my awareness that we only need privacy because of corrupt government policy (or, more aptly, corrupt human tendencies), I'll just say this.

Have you seen Karate Kid? I know, I know. Bear with me. Mr. Miyagi taught Daniel karate, why? So he didn't have to use it. I felt like that was the most important quote in the film, and it applies to the issue of privacy as well. Of course, he does use his karate--many times--because the world around him is filled with belligerent assholes. It's not a perfect world.

That is the extent to which I believe in one's right to privacy. You can have your privacy--again, I won't force you to reveal everything about your life to me (not that I'd care about a great deal of it). But in a perfect world, no one would even give a fuck about anyone's interests. We wouldn't have to be so private about anything.

And I recognize that that's not the world I live in.
Forgive me for wanting to emulate it.

So privacy is only necessary (in terms of security) so long as the world is not utopian.

Basically, yeah, but not just in terms of security. Privacy in terms of... social stuff, like... what music you listen to, what TV shows you watch, and what you keep under your bed, is and will always be a farce--a projection. To me.

I think Verbatim's disdain for privacy stems from a sort of contempt for people who aren't willing to own their actions, and engage with a sense of self-reliance which I actually relate to very heavily. I don't see privacy as an end for its own sake, merely as a safe-guard from invasive (be they oppressive or paternalistic) governments.

But that's probably because I'm more of a political thinker.

Yeah. Oh, not to mention the mutual trust factor. Not being private allows you to become more trustworthy than someone who is, I've found--but in exchange, you have to trust the person you're divulging information with.

So, I mean, it's always healthy to have someone who you can open up to. The "trust no one" mentality is honestly quite juvenile, and I've grown out of that years ago. Again, it makes sense politically, but socially, I don't think it's compatible.
