No local library will have the scale of information that's on the internet. It's also much easier for scientists and researchers to share information and experiments. Even if local Library's did have this much info, it's much easier to find it on the internet then in the library. Human's are very social, we can now easily communicate with others all over the world, sharing experiences, stories, and ideals. Sure, it's not perfect, and there are some problems with it, but since when have we created something that's perfect? Overall I think the vast sharing of information and the social advantage that comes with the internet outweighs the bad things it also brings.

Because of places like 4chan and YouTube and any website that promotes idiocy instead of rational discussion, as the Internet was perhaps intended. It's addictive as all fuck and most people who have the Internet spend an average of three to six hours on it per day.

Idiocy is nothing new, when archaeologists dug up Pompeii they found a lot of lewd graffiti written in Latin about sex and gossip.  And 4chan and YouTube are only a small part of the overall internet.  Computers and the internet have revolutionized academia and made information accessible that would have otherwise not have been accessible in the past.  And as for the internet being addicting many things can be addicting; cigarettes and alcohol are very addicting would you like to ban them? 

Part of the problem with the internet is the fact that the incentive to remember, coalesce and actually incorporate information. When it comes to quite esoteric information, I've taken to writing it down in a word document and regularly going over it.

Otherwise, I just use it in conjunction with reading non-fiction.

That goes for all of us. And 90% of the population.

Most of us only look up stuff when we need it for one specific temporary task, and then we forget the info forever. But it's okay, because we can just look it up again!...

It's insidious.

Academics and researchers take advantage of the wealth of information available in databases on a regular basis.
