Yep. I have decided to give 8.1 the other eye. Yes, MS still done fucked it up with Windows 8 too.

But after playing around with it so much in a virtual machine and how quickly it boots up (seriously it's ready by like 10 seconds compared to Windows 7 which too even longer for me)

There are really minor differences between it and Windows 7. For instance. Yes the start menu is no longer a list and it's rather some Metro UI tile bullshit, but oddly enough I've gotten use to it. Some of these apps are nice, plus there are games that I can't just get on Windows 7. Games for Windows Live and Halo 2 still work just fine so long as you have the updated Games for Windows Live Client installed, so it's pretty much the same drill as Windows 7 if you want that game.

You don't really need an antivirus unless you go to really really dirty sites often, then I'd suggest getting something that doesn't give you full administrative control and does the work for you if you're a noob.

MSE is incompatible because Windows Defender in Windows 8 is pretty much MSE with some bonuses included. So in a way it's MSE right out of the box and I don't need to install it or anything. It's already on and working.

So yeah, ask me anything about lolWindows 8.1

I don't see why people are bent out of shape about win8/8.1. It's a great OS with some great under-the-hood improvements over win7.

I've been using 8 and 8.1 since they came out.

Well it's mainly a preference issue with Windows users really. There are still people that run on XP I'm sure of that. Hell my brother-in-law still runs Vista on his machine.

If you ever do, you'd want 8.1 instead of 8. Then yet again even if you get 8 the upgrade to 8.1 is free. But if you don't want Windows 8, I advise waiting for Windows 10 to be released, as I will be upgrading to that later next year when it's finally out.

I hear ya. Testing the preview build of Windows 8 sucked though. It was a mess. A lot has changed since then.

That's what I keep telling him but according to him he's never had one problem with it since the day he bought his computer back in 2007.

My stupidity is self evident.
I got an auto-update for 8.1 on my computer a while back and it basically made my pc unusable. I kept getting these insane lag spikes for seemingly no reason. Turns out my disk usage would periodically just go nuts, never really figured out why. So I just refreshed my pc.

School was able to give you a free upgrade? Yeah, they denied me. But at least when it comes to purchasing, I have it backed up on a blank DVD so I can always do a clean install if need be. I even have the product key backed up.

No, the windows store says it's free, I just have to install other updates before I do.

We always say to fight fire, you must use fire. This is wrong. Fighting fire with fire will leave scars and a new flame will rise. We must instead use water. It is the opposite of fire, it extinguishes the fire, it cools, it refreshes, it heals. We are made up of 70% water, we are not made up of 70% fire. Please practice what we truly are
Windows 8 is already dated because Windows 10 comes out next year. I'm waiting for that

Yes I know about that. I don't really want it honestly. I had it before and I didn't like it as much when I was on Windows 7.

In my eyes, it's not dated until Microsoft officially releases Windows 10 with all other sorts of shit that it can do that other OS's can't.

As of right now, Windows 10 isn't too different from Windows 8.1 but I bet it will be by the time Fall of next year hits.

The metro / tile UI is absolutely horrendous imo.
But you don't have to use it. You just click on "desktop" and it's basically the same as win7

Did you use any of the programs I told you about ages ago to skip the tiles and get the "normal" start button and lay-out back?

I have 8.1 too, and I'm liking it quite a bit. It does boot up insanely fast. My laptop's ready to go in like 15 seconds (from completely off to fully signed in and google chrome open).

I have for 7, but not for 8.1 no.

Personally I can live without it. Mine boots straight to the desktop anyway. Not to the tiles.

I've had some issues with classic shell in the past, besides, I do like the apps that I have.

You mind listing everyone else though as a crash course? I'm curious to look into those and hopefully classic shell won't have any fucking problems this time around.

That's true, but it still boots up to it. There's also the lack of a "proper" start button and the "apps" that are always full-screen and are set as the default way of doing stuff.

Don't get me wrong though, I love my 8.1. I just much prefer it with the program ClassicShell installed, which removes the tiles and default apps and brings back the start button.
You don't have to boot to it, tho.
