A reason I've heard it is because different states have different taxes. Doesn't change the fact that they can just print more labels.

I live in an area where cities can/do have their own sales tax. So, at checkout the cashier will ask for your zip code in order for the appropriate tax to be added and logged/sent to the relevant city.

Here is a true story from my neighborhood:

So there's this little shopping outlet about a half mile from my house. And there is this one guy who lives right next to it. So, what method of transportation does he use to get from his house to the store? Not his feet, but his fucking CAR. It's about 200 feet of walking, but instead he picks to drive.

I pretty much always have a calculator, or my phone which doubles as one.
But it's nice to have the tax included.
Especially considering you can just calculate the tax from the displayed price if you were stupid enough to not know what it was.

Companies know that "$4.99 + Tax" sounds like a better deal than "$5.74". It also allows companies to advertise the same price all over instead of having to change it because of difference of taxes in different regions.
