Could you even have a submarine that big?
Wouldn't it have to turn into a surface carrier to allow aircraft to launch? That seems like it could potentially be problematic, unless you expect aircraft to suddenly know how to swim.
They already made jets that can take off across the water.Unconventional and a waste.
Not at all. It could be exactly like a ballistic missile submarine where the missiles can fire even when the sub is still submerged. With an aircraft carrier I guess they could put the aircraft in special pods to fire them through the water or something.
That would require some insane engineering to be able to submerse a vehicle of that size. The elevators to bring the craft to the flight deck would also need to be sealed better than they probably can be. I doubt it would be able to dive very far, since the water pressure might be too much for the elevators to handle. I guess there could be retractable doors that go over the elevator to seal it. It is an interesting idea, but it would quite an engineering feat.
That seems excessive.
It wouldn't need elevators. They could launch the aircraft exactly the same way ballistic missile submarines fir their payloads. Would just need some special pods to protect the aircraft from the water.
It's not a very practical thing. It would have to carry less than our current carriers, cost a ridiculous amount more per unit, and require absurd amounts of pmcs and upkeep.Besides, it's not like our carriers operate alone without anti-sub support or even on the edge of a naval group. Those things stay pretty central, so you've got a lot of ships and countermeasures to get through to hit one.
Aircraft carriers have large indoor hangars beneath the flight deck where craft are stored, and then taken to the deck with large elevators. That is how a vehicle like this would function. They would obviously not leave any aircraft on the flight deck when submerging. They would need retractable doors to seal the elevators, but would not need to cover the entire flight deck.
Not many people are stupid enough to attack an American aircraft carrier either.
Except the Japanese >.> damn ballsy mofos
True, but a submersible carrier wouldn't need a whole carrier group escorting it since it could stealthily navigate through the waters by itself.
They are a completely unrealistic idea, just like the flying one in The Avengers. I am simply discussing how one would function as both a submarine and an aircraft carrier. It is basically impossible, just fun to discuss.
