Why do we need a muting function?

Considering the fact that we don't fall under the "be your own moderator" bullshit, why are we still able to mute others? Is it so that the people who can't handle the thought of others having a different opinion than them can shut those people out and act like they aren't there?

I'd really like to know.

That's another thing that really grinds my gears with muting. People get into arguments, but when they end up losing said argument or get offended by something, instead of coming up with a proper retort they can just throw the mute card.

I know, it's just the way I am. I was raised with the principle of going through rough patches in life instead of taking the easy way out to deal with problems. Seeing people use the mute feature irks me.
