nowadays, i only ever do <_< for suspicion/distrust, -_- for contempt/annoyance, and :^) for teasing and such
also :/ or :-/ for disappointment

everything else, i only do ironically

i like adding hyphen noses, though--i think it looks dumb otherwise

eh, the hyphen noses make sense, but looking at them in a text or online just... makes me wonder if the person who typed it out is like 80 years old and barely figured out how to text.

Well you're doing it backwards, for a start. The only reason I would ever add the nose is because the Huawei keyboard has a smiley face key that puts it in with the nose.
