English is just memorizing rules and constructing sentences using those rules. I'd much rather read about past events tbh imo fam.
wrong, retard

it's also about rhetoric, or the effective use of language

AKA some people will grasp it, others won't

there's nothing about history that cannot be grasped by anyone
History is useful for plenty of things, how to cut your hair if you want people to think you hate minorities for example.
history is useful for basically nothing

internet debates, "doomed to repeat it" meme, being smug about knowing more useless shit than someone else

that's about it

it's okay to hate turks because some of them did bad things at various points in history

but don't you dare start hating white people for doing even worse shit at basically every point in history

"flaming nipple chops"-Your host, the man they call Ghost.

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.
Imagine being so dumb that you think major events in the history and development of humanity is boring.
again, that's more a sign of intelligence than anything

i'm too smart to be entertained by such objectively boring shit

what is entertaining or interesting about any of this, if you're a smart person
For someone who hates humanity so much, you would think that you would be well versed in it and all the various events you could cite as examples of why we should all die.
which i have, and do, because i have a laymen's grasp of history, and that's all you need

just enough to know humans are shit, not enough to have super detailed conversations about hyperspecific events

you don't have to be a fake armchair historian to comment on the atrocities of humanity
So you think it's wise to let someone with an extensive knowledge of history defeat your argument using their greater understanding of events, people, and development of mankind? Is it not the logical outcome when you limit your knowledge of a subject to be confounded by someone who is far beyond your limit?

i think people in general should stay in their lane, it's okay for people to be ignorant about subjects they're not interested in, so long as they don't completely shut themselves away from it, which i haven't

people who know their history, that's great—feel free to school me if i ever say anything ignorant about history, because i don't know a lot about it

i respect those people, but i'm just commenting on how weird it is for so many of the members on this forum to find the subject so very interesting, and i feel like i'm the only person here who just couldn't be fucked

it's weird
it's weird in the same way that everyone on bungle is trans

admittedly though germany has tried its hardest to redeem itself since ww2 while the turkish government still actively denies the armenian genocide (among other things), and modern turkish nationalism seems more prevalent than german nationalism

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

you can't get "good" at history, and like any subject that simply involves memorization of facts, anyone can "master" it
That's the difference between "history" and "historiography"; one is rote memorization of data, the other is applying critical thinking to data to derive the most likely nature of events.  This is true for all history (just look at the debate between narratives of events only 20 years ago, and what each side says about the consequences) but especially for ancient history, where sparse data and extremely biased accounts make it difficult to ascertain the exact nature of events.

I can get behind you in terms of Wikistorians, but as a field it's more than just memorizing facts.

Germany isn't Russia
With what we know about German involvement in the July Crisis, the Schlieffen Plan, the use of chemical weapons against Russia on January 31, 1915 (then once again April 22 on the Western front), and their failure to negotiate a peace with Russia early in the war (due to Germany's unwillingness to cease hostilities against France and GB) shows that Germany did play a role in kindling the war and it becoming the monstrosity we know it as today.

Russia definitely played a major role, though, equal at least to Germany.

i still don't know where you find the time to learn about all this boring shit

Most of it is as simple as reading the news - Greek Cypriots still have protests every year in London, of all places, about the illegal occupation of Northern Cyprus. Erdogan took a huge dump on democratic processes earlier last year/year before that, and we got a little glimpse of it with Turkish protesters getting mown-down by LAV's, and the attempted coup by the Army. This year he sent German-manufactured tanks into Afrin in Syria to wipe out the Kurds who took it from ISIS - all glances of headlines, not much more in it.

As for the earlier shit... can't say much. I know more about Cyprus itself due to my own personal investment in it (Greek Cypriot Uncle, visited Cyprus for geology and lecturer happened to study the place during and shortly after the conflict began). Armenian stuff and the Ottomans I only know via second-hand comments from someone else.

It's like you likely know a fuckton more about American History than you do Irish history, whereas I'm the opposite. If you have some tie to the place, or a thing, or a people, you're more likely to know stuff about it than someone who isn't. Kinda basic.

I'd like to add that history is good for the context of the times we live in too, since a lot of the issues we are facing today are almost always due to decisions in the past, sometimes centuries old.

For example WW1, a big reason the Middle East is in a hell hole it is now is because the British and French empires promised the Arabs their own land after WW1 in fighting the Turks, only they didn't do that and it led to grouping people up who hated each other, and splitting people who wanted to be together. You're seeing the same effect in the middle east.

It also gave rise to a radical version of Islam that came from the House of Saud, called Wahhabism (it's basically an ultra conservative fundamentalist view on Islam), and they spread that around due to the power via oil they had, and the land they conquered. It helped spawn the terrorists sects you see today (with the help of modern decisions). Does that mean the Middle East was super peaceful and would be that way had it worked differently? Probably not. It was always a place where a lot of fighting took place.

I think that sort of stuff is important to know, lest you succumb to the ignorance and propaganda you're often subjected to on TV and websites. Then you get very sweeping and stupid statements like "islam is the reason the middle east is a shit hole", when forgetting about everything that took place around it going back even further in time (hello Mongols, you sacked Baghdad, the hub world of science and knowledge. You mean to tell me when this all burns there won't be repercussions? There are repercussions of one dude dying by a self driven Tesla car, and that's a blip on the radar).

there is my autistic rant for the day

I still say the fallout of Ferdinand's assassination would have remained a regional conflict if not for the franco-russo alliance.

Of course, but it's all a matter of degrees. WWI was the culmination of multiple boiling points; one or two points being absent would resulted in a less horrific event, but wouldn't have stopped it outright.
