Why are people so ungrateful?

For example during the 40's my grandpa was choosing to go on a tripe to Europe which was fully paid by the Government. So the trip up and back was free including lodging and food. I don't know which part it was but I think it was near France. You would think most people would have a good time in Europe and be grateful that the trip was fully paid for buy someone else including other benefits. But nope, not that guy. All he did was complain about how cold it was and the hick population firing their guns or setting off fireworks everyday. So why are people so ungrateful for the things they have or receiving something for free?

It's a WW2 joke. My grandpa ended up getting drafted during the war and he was a US combat engineer somewhere in Europe. It think it was somewhere near France or Germany.
