Why are dub actors almost always terrible?

I wish Troy Baker would go back though. After Bioshock Infinite he's suddenly too good to play Kanji again. But whatever, Matthew Mercer did a terrific job coming in mid-season when Troy was on his honeymoon, and taking over.

I wouldn't say "better" because detecting a language, especially Japanese, is hard. People don't take in the tone, pacing (which is the hardest one), and emotion. Loud =/= good. Especially when a lot of Japanese people have said that in anime, a lot of the voice actors are over dramatic and energetic. You know Dynasty Warriors dubbed and how it's silly and over the top, but in a good way? Basically that.

Examples of great dubs though?

Gurren Lagann
Dragon Ball Z (Goku subbed is horrible)
Full Metal Alchemist
Persona 4 (it was a game, but an anime too so shut up)
Fate/Zero
Berserk the movie
Baccano!
PSG
Index
Spice and Wolf
Space Dandy
Cowboy BeBop

There are countless examples of dubbed things actually being good. It's just the quality of the voice actor/actress and the direction they want them to take the characters.

Anyone who says all dubs sound like shit and all of Japanese stuff is great, clearly don't know a lick about voice acting, and how they can't even listen to another language and see if it's good or bad for almost 90% of it. Now is it true that more Japanese voice actors are more talented in the field of anime? I would say yes since they have a large industry and schools focused on it. But they are just as hit and miss as dubs can be.

Edit: At the end of the day, it almost ALWAYS falls to preference. I enjoy both, and will swap it up with dub and sub with a few things. However when I do run into anime/games that are just awful in dubbed voice acting, I will make every effort to change that language to Japanese.

Gurren Lagann brought me and my girlfriend together, it's a touching story. It's also got some good messages there if you look into it. I love it.

I personally am one the very small few who holds the complete opposite of the general opinion on anime voice actors. A lot of fans make the claim that they don't sound anything like the character, or that they don't put enough emotion into acting, or that studios should hire full blown actors. The first two can be somewhat justifiable, but the last expectation is complete horseshit. Why should a company hire a full fledged actor when the original creator did not and when the actor is going to charge more for doing literally the same job? Sorry, but I feel a lot of the voice actors for anime are pretty okay in my book. Spice And Wolf, Darker Than Black, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell, these are all shows that have really top notch voice acting.

Another gripe I have with the majority view is that they somehow feel a VA should be personally attached to whatever it is they're doing. They LOVE to talk about how great Asuka's English VA is, but when asked why they usually spout some bullshit like "She's a fan of Eva" or "She likes to watch anime too!" as if that somehow has fucking ANYTHING to do with the job. Sorry, but Asuka's VA sounds like pure shit and her VA isn't somehow better just because she's a fan of the show.

Most anime fans bitch because "muh localization" and are incredibly spiteful. They act as if they're forced to watch the show in the dub when every anime distributor releases the show in Japanese with English subtitles, but then they just go and bitch about the subs "not being accurate" this isn't fucking Nintendo of America and their ligitmate censorship, it's legitimate localization. When watching 2.22 in FUNimation's English sub, there's a point where a character makes the comment "According to our calculations, a chance of a direct hit is over 99%!" with the character actually saying "percent" yet when I watch the "Superior" fan translated rip with "accurate" subs the line is changed to "Our calculations shows a direct hit of over six nines!" You tell me which one sounds more legitimate.

Also the translation for FE:Fates is actually pretty spot on. It's just the touching part of the amie was removed apparently. IGN has said on their podcast that that portion of the game wasn't completely cut out and you still get to hear/read the conversations that come out of it which means that the relationship benefits, backstory, and world building that came from it is still intact. The only things that were changed were a bunch of names (so that the localizers could get bigger paychecks) and one Soleli support because of the flurry of false reporting from places like Kotaku when the game first came out in Japan and Nintendo wanted to avoid having that pop up again.

Sorry, but to me her voice is like nails to a chalkboard. Which is a shame because every other VA for Eva is extremely well done, I feel they really dropped the ball bringing back Tiffany Grant for 2.22 and 3.33.

As if butchering everyone's voices isn't bad enough (especialy Kai's) the openings have been reduced to unintelligible engrish and they don't even use the corresponding openings for each arc.

I'm the same for the most part. I'd prefer to watch a foreign film in its original language purely for purposes of authenticity.

the only thing i didnt like about hellsing ultimate's dub was the voice actress for seras. crispin freeman as alucard tho...
