Rockets on my X
On the subject of, well, rather sad news, I learned something today. Over the past month or two, this little woman has been coming into my cafe. And, for the most part, I didn't really take too much notice of her. But one day, something caught my eye. She came in with a cast on her arm.

I was curious, and I did a little bit of digging. Turns out, this woman was working as a farmhand in the fields when a combine wrench fell on her arm and snapped it like a twig. But, a day later, she was back at work with a cast.

Gutsy little woman. And, I started paying more attention to her. Realized that she's very quiet. Speaks intelligently. And, today, I put the last piece of the puzzle together. Not only do I understand why she's so gutsy, but why she's so quiet.

She has a hereditary congenial heart defect. What this means is, at any time, at any age, her heart can just stop. And she'll die on the spot. One of her older relatives died at 35 because of it.

So, now I understand. And I'm going to do something about it. In person, surrounded by people, I'm not much of a speaker. But I can write my thoughts freely.

And the more I watch her, the more I see. The more I listen, the more I understand. She's not open to people, because it hangs over her that she could die, at any moment. And, she's depressed about it.

So tonight, I wrote some words down, on paper for her. And, when and if I bump into her again, hopefully I can brighten up her day.

But, onto the subject at hand, that sucks. A few months back a nice 17 year old in town lost her fight with lukemia. It's good that they caught things early though. The earlier you catch a cancer, the better.

Stalker.

Things work a little bit differently up here amigo. Word of mouth, gossip, is ever present. Talk to the right people and you get the truths about folks. Can't call me much of a stalker if I've only ever seen her in person about 7 times over the course of three months.
